ABOUT THIS CLASS
This year we will study the Western Hemisphere (North America, Central American, and South America). We will focus on the Aztec, Incan, Mayan, and North American Native Civilizations from the Age of Exploration and Colonization until 1754. The themes will be: Civic mindedness, economic decision-making, geographical reasoning, and historical thinking.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
· Be in your seat when the bell rings
· Have homework, agenda, and all class materials ready
· If you need to borrow any supplies, quickly gather them from the supply area
· Begin the Welcome Work
· Copy the agenda / · Put your incomplete work in your Social Studies folder
· Make sure to write down any homework
· Return all supplies to the supply area
· Look around your seat and make sure you take all of your belongings / · Check the missed homework folders on the back wall
· You have 2 days for every day you miss to complete work
· Return your work in the MAKE UP WORK basket
· Remember it is always best to try and be AT school! You miss a lot when you are not here!

F BELOW 60 / Students may earn up to 10 points extra credit points per week (90 points per 9 weeks). Students may do this by finding an article from a RELIABLE source (newspaper, magazine, or internet) relating to social studies or current events. Students must write a one paragraph summary and reflection of the article. Staple your article and summary together and turn into the EXTRA CREDIT basket. Your summary must be your own work - plagiarized summaries and reflections will not be credited.
TECHNOLOGY
We will use a variety of apps and sites during the school year. You will not be permitted to bring your personal device (i.e. iPads, phone, tablet, etc.) until you have signed the districts use policy and Ms. Rockel's classroom policy.
INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK
We will be using an interactive notebook in this class. Almost everything you do in this class will go in your notebook. Make sure you have it in class. Do not throw anything away until Instructed to do so!!
MAKE UP WORK
Students will have the opportunity to resubmit assignments for a better grade. Students must turn in resubmissions no later than 2 school days after the initial assignment was graded. Unless otherwise noted by Ms. Rockel, students may not retake quizzes or exams.
BONUS BUCKS
Students will have an opportunity to earn “Bonus Bucks” throughout the year. Bonus Bucks are recognition that a student has gone above and beyond normal expected classroom behavior. It is expected that students attend class every day, actively participate, and turn in all assignments. However, student behavior that goes above the norm may be rewarded with Bonus Bucks. For example, a student that participates with well-thought out answers in the class discussion may earn Bonus Bucks. Students can redeem Bonus Bucks for a variety of things (i.e. sitting in the teacher’s chair for a day, dropping a homework assignment, or personal activity time at the end of a class). A full description of Bonus Buck rewards will be given to students. All Bonus Bucks are given at the discretion of Ms. Rockel.
DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES – WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU BREAK THE RULES
1st Offense
A demerit will be marked in Ms. Rockel's records and the student will receive a verbal warning.
2nd Offense
We will complete an action plan (written warning) and a parent or guardian will be notified.
3rd Offense
Discipline referral will be submitted to the Principals
Severe discipline issues will immediately be referred to our school Principals
If you are having trouble in this class, please make an appointment to see me. I am happy to assist any student who wants or needs extra help. This will be a great year!
