THE ORGANIZATION
The Urban Strategies Council, founded in 1987, is a community building support organization based in Oakland, California. The Council’s mission is to reduce persistent poverty by helping to transform low-income neighborhoods into vibrant, healthy communities. The Council provides research and data analysis, strategic planning, program development, technical assistance and advocacy in the service of low-income communities.
THE POSITION
The Council seeks a full-time Director for the Research and Technology Unit who can manage and coordinate a wide range of research activities including:
- Planning, coordinating and implementing research activities for the organization including:
- Designing research studies, data collection instruments, analysis and reports
- Identifying, acquiring, documenting and managing data bases
- Supervising collection of data through interviews, focus groups, surveys and other methods
- Consulting internal staff on research activities and projects
- Responding to community requests for data and analysis
- Providing technical assistance and training to external partners on research projects and activities to expand their capacities to use data and information for action
- Managing design and implementation on an online data warehouse and GIS mapping service
- Working with partners to increase access to information technology in low-income communities
- Representing the organization locally and nationally on matters related to research and poverty research
- Writing research reports
- Supervising and coordinating the work of two full-time research analysts
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 year’s experience in research)
- 3+ years experience in research, data analysis and interpretation and report preparation; program evaluation experience a plus
- Experience with research design and statistical analysis
- Experience with GIS/Mapping software and analysis using ARCView and MapInfo
- Experience with Microsoft Office and PC network environment; Access, statistical packages and HTML
- Excellent communication, analytical, writing, and project management skills, and excellent professional judgement
- Experience in supervision and administration
- Experience in group facilitation and meeting management
- Ability to work with people from diverse ethnic, linguistic and economic backgrounds
COMPENSATION:
- $45,000-55,000/year (depending on experience)
