Environmental Summit Planning Committee Conference Call
August 5, 2004
Summary
Mr. Brad Strohm, Delphi Corporation, called the conference call to order at 9:00am EDT with the following individuals participating on the call:
Pat Beattie, GM
Amy Goldman, SP
Courtney Hagen, SP
Tom Murray, U.S. EPA
Tara O’Hare, U.S. EPA
Mr. Strohm welcomed and thanked everyone for participating on the call. He reviewed SP’s antitrust guidelines and asked participants to mark in their meeting notes that the guidelines were reviewed.
The purpose of the call was to determine the topic(s) for the SP Symposium. The call participants agreed that it would be referred to as a Summit and not a Symposium. Mr. Strohm noted that USCAR recently held a symposium regarding flame-retardants so he suggested SP explore a different area, such as mercury. Mr. Tom Murray, U.S. EPA, noted that mercury is a compelling topic for several reasons, including the increasing amount mercury is being discussed in the automotive industry, Denso’s recent press release announcing its creation of a mercury-free lamp system for automobiles, and the fact that Honda has approached EPA in regards to working together on mercury issues which may be promising for getting other OEMs involved in the symposium. Ms. Pat Beattie, GM, raised the issue of mercury being related to many regulatory burdens that might be contentious. The Planning Committee agreed and stated that the symposium should focus on providing state regulatory agencies with alternative options rather than more regulations.
Ms. Beattie suggested that SP invite the electronics industry to co-sponsor the Summit given that the electronics industry uses mercury more than the automotive industry. Mr. Strohm concurred, suggesting that the Summit should highlight the relationship between the two industries and areas in which both industries need to work together to achieve a common goal. The Planning Committee agreed that this would be the focus of the first Summit, which would probably lead into discussing primarily mercury, but also lead and flame-retardants.
Ms. Beattie also suggested another good idea for a Summit would be the integration of lean and green in manufacturing. She noted that this would be an appealing topic to all members and guests, not just those with technical backgrounds, and that it would be a good topic to get other sectors interested in SP. Mr. Strohm suggested that the Planning Committee work on this idea simultaneously with the larger Summit idea, noting that unless SP begins to tackle bigger projects and prove its value it would be harder to keep interest in the organization. Mr. Strohm volunteered Ms. Angie Coyle, Delphi Corporation, to contact Ms. Amy Goldman and Ms. Courtney Hagen, SP, to arrange a conference call to discuss the lean manufacturing Summit idea and to develop an email for distribution to the membership to assemble a planning committee. The target date for the lean manufacturing discussion would be the 4th Quarter meeting in October.
Mr. Murray also noted that there are several members of SP whose participation has decreased, and that the specific Summit idea might be a way to get them more involved by sending a personal note to them in regards to the Summit. Mr. Strohm volunteered to contact Denso, Johnson Controls and Motorola, all of which should be interested in a Summit cosponsored by the electronics industry.
The Planning Committee agreed that the event would be named, “Electronics and Automotive Industry Environmental Summit” and that SP would be listed as the sponsor. The Planning Committee will also explore the possibility of having AIAG cosponsor the event and Mr. Murray will discuss the Summit with his contacts in the electronics industry.
ACTION ITEMS/NEXT STEPS:
• Ms. Coyle will contact Ms. Goldman and Ms. Hagen to set up a conference call discussing the lean manufacturing October Summit idea.
• Ms. Goldman and Ms. Hagen will send an email to the SP membership to assemble a planning committee for the lean manufacturing October Summit.
• Mr. Strohm will contact Denso, Johnson Controls and Motorola inviting them to participate in the Summit Planning Committee. Mr. Strohm will copy Ms. Goldman and Ms. Hagen on those emails, which will be used to distribute to the SP membership.
The next conference call is scheduled for Friday, August 13, at 12pm EDT.
