2This unit standard refers exclusively to making knives using various widths and thicknesses of 'pre-sharpened cold bend knife blade steel'(knife steel). Common widths are, 19mm, 23.8mm, 32mm, 50mm. This unit standard is not applicable to making 'forge steel knives' or knives from 'rule steel'.

Set up and maintain bending equipment.

performance criteria

1.1Pattern is matched to cut knife steel lengths.

1.2Bending machine is selected to match knife steel width and/or company practice.

Range:manual, hydraulic.

1.3Male and female bending tools are selected to match knife steel width.

1.4Bending tools are checked for compliance with company tolerances.

Range:vertical, no excess wear.

1.5Bending tools not complying with company tolerances are reground or replaced according to company practice.

Bend knife steel to pattern shape.

performance criteria

2.1End of knife steel length is ground to match inside bevel (if any) of knife steel.

2.2Knife steel is bent to conform with pattern shape.

2.3Knife steel is grooved to make sharp angle bend in accordance with pattern requirements.

2.4Bent shape is checked against pattern to comply with company tolerances.

Range:matches pattern, ends align, flat, no damage.

2.5Rejected shapes are modified to match pattern according to company tolerances.

2.6Work practices meet company safety requirements.
