SNC2D - Writing Chemical Equations Name______

1.  For each of the following chemical reactions, write the word equation using the skeleton equation given:

a.  H2 + Cl2 → HCl *treat HCl like it is an ionic compound

b.  Mg + O2 → MgO

c.  Ca + H2O → Ca(OH)2 + H2 *don’t forget your polyatomic ion names

d.  Zn + S → ZnS

e.  Mg + CuSO4 → MgSO4 + Cu

2.  For each of the following chemical reactions, write the skeleton equation using the word equation given:

a.  Nitrogen + Chlorine → Nitrogen trichloride

b.  Magnesium + Chlorine → Magnesium chloride

c.  Lithium + Aluminum chloride → Lithium chloride + Aluminum

d.  Rubidium + Phosphorous → Rubidium phosphide

e.  Calcium chloride + Silver nitrate → Silver chloride + Calcium nitrate

3. For each of the following reactions, write the chemical formula using:

i.  A word equation (names of the chemicals)

ii.  A formula equation (formulas of the chemicals)

a. The Haber Process is a very important chemical reaction that is the first step towards making fertilizer. In order to make fertilizer, pure nitrogen gas in the air must be reacted with pure hydrogen gas. They must be combined at a temperature of 500oC, and a pressure of 3000 pounds per square inch (PSI)! This produces ammonia (NH3), which can then be used to make fertilizer. (Hint – remember HOFBrIN the Clown!)

b. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a common chemical that can be purchased at the drug store. It has many uses, including sterilizing cuts, and cleaning stains. However, over time hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen gas. Therefore, containers must be specially designed to allow the oxygen to seep out of the container. (Hint – read carefully to determine what the reactant and products are)
