1.THE VACANCY
For 1stSeptember 2013, we are seeking a well qualified and ambitious teacher of Boys’ PE to join a dynamic and highly motivated PE Faculty in this Leading Edge School. The person appointed will be able to demonstrate high quality teaching skills to deliver the PE curriculum and in addition be committed to extra-curricular activities including coaching.
- THE FACULTY
The permanent, fulltime post provides an excellent opportunity to join a thriving school for either a newly qualified teacher or an experienced teacher. The appointment will take effect from 1st September 2013. We are looking for an enthusiastic teacher to teach across all key stages with a full commitment to extra-curricular activities/teams and especially rugby.
The governors will be seeking to appoint a Teacher of Boys’ Physical Education with the following qualities and abilities;-
- A well-qualified and motivated teacher of physical education
- An ability to teach our major games of football, rugby, hockey and cricket
- The ability to teach GCSE Physical Education to a high level
- Experience of, or an ambition to teach A Level PE
- A commitment to high standards and able to motivate pupils of all abilities
- An ability and passion to coach school teams especially rugby
- Good ICT skills
- Enthusiasm to deliver extra-curricular activities
3.THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION FACILITIES
The Faculty is fortunate to have extensive and well planned playing fields and facilities.
These include:
A full size floodlit Astroturf pitch
Hard surface areas which include:
7 tennis courts.
5 Netball courts.
A separate floodlit 3G5-a-side area.
An outdoor Basketball area.
A teaching pitch for Soccer and Rugby.
Training Grids.
A Sports Hall which includes:
4 Badminton courts.
A Basketball court.
2 Squash courts and an elevated viewing balcony.
A Gymnasium which is used for Gymnastics and various other activities.
All of the above are housed on the main school site.
Accessible via a footbridge linked to the main school site are:
2 Rugby pitches.
5 Soccer pitches.
A 400m Athletics track.
Redgra jumping area.

4.EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
A termly timetable is published and given to each pupil listing practices and clubs available in all major games. National and local cups, leagues and tournaments are entered and fixtures take place on a regular basis. School clubs and teams are run in all of the major sports throughout the year with practices taking place at lunchtime and after school. In addition to this a comprehensive and highly competitive Inter-house sports programme is run which involves up to 80% of pupils in years 7 – 11.
5. THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM
The Faculty offers a broad and balanced curriculum that meets the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum. Physical Education is compulsory for all pupils Years 7-11. Year 12 and 13 students may choose to be involved in a timetabled recreation afternoon each calendar week. Fixtures against neighbouring schools take place during this time.
The school operates a 10 day timetable with 58 periods in each 10 day cycle. Year 7 pupils receive 5 x 50 minute lessons per fortnight. Year 8-11 receive 4 x 50 minute lessons per fortnight. Year 7 pupils are taught in single sex mixed ability groups. From Year 8 onwards pupils are taught according to ability.
GCSE Physical Education Games (AQA) is taught in an option block usually to two parallel groups and receive 5 x 50 minute lessons per fortnight. GCSE numbers at present are 62 in year 11, 63 in year 10 and 61in year 9. Year 9 students also have the timetabled option of studying a range of Sports Leadership courses, including Level 1 Sports Leaders, Young First Aider and other NGB awards. GCE AS/A2 (OCR) is delivered through 12 periods per fortnight in Year 12 and 11 periods in Year 13. BTEC Level 3 National Diploma is offered to Year 12 students.
- THE ROLE
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and be actively involved in continuing to develop PE within the school throughout the age and ability range including A-level and GCSE exam classes. The successful candidate will be a tutor within our House based pastoral system.

7. RECENT SPORTING SUCCESSES
Taken from the latest Governor’s report:
Gordano School won the North Somerset cross-country championships at Hutton Moor with 15 of our runners achieving a top 10 finish. Our swimmers did themselves proud in the North Somerset swimming gala, with the Year 7 and 8 boys and girls winning their age category. Overall all teams were runners up.
Our G&T sessions continue which see 20 of our more able athletes arriving in school every Friday at 7.30am to be put through their paces in some generic fitness work.

The Year 10 rugby team were entered into the Daily Mail U15 Competition. They made it to the last 64 in the country. This is a fantastic achievement, eventually losing to Clifton College.
Even though football is not one of the major sports this term, there are still National and County cup matches that need to be played. The Year 7 boy’s team have reached the Round of 64 of the national competition after 3 successive victories. They await the draw after a comprehensive 6-2 victory over Bedminster Down School. In all 4 years of entering the National Competition, the current year 10 team remain unbeaten over the course of a full game.
