INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL DRESS AND GROOMING

The District’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Grooming and dress that will disturb, interfere with, or detract from the learning process or school activities will not be allowed.

Dress Code:

  1. Unnatural hair coloring, hair curlers, or rollers will not be permitted.
  2. No student will wear exposed rings, studs or other jewelry associated with body piercing. No facial jewelry will be allowed. Students may however, wear earrings or ear studs.
  3. Dresses skirts, all split garments, and shorts must not be shorter than 4” above the knee.
  4. Midriffs must be covered at all times, whether sitting or standing.
  5. Hats, caps, rakes, picks, hoods, headbands, and bandanas are not allowed.
  6. Sunglasses will not be permitted unless a physician’s prescription is provided.
  7. Students must wear shoes. No house shoes are to be worn.
  8. Pants must be fitted at the waist and at the crotch. Pants sagging will not be permitted. Cutoffs, bicycle shorts, athletic shorts, and boxers are not allowed.
  9. Clothing that has been altered by cutting, tearing or shredding will not be allowed. Un-patched holes in clothing are not allowed.
  10. Sleeveless shirts must have a width of at least 3 ½ inches at the shoulder and the arm opening must be no more than 1 inch from underarm area.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLDRESS AND GROOMING

with or distract from the learning process or school activities will not be allowed.

  1. Unnatural hair coloring will not be permitted.
  2. No student will wear exposed rings, studs, or other jewelry associated with body piercing. Students may however, wear earrings or ear studs.
  3. Caps, stocking caps, visors, hoods, bandanas, or headbands are NOT allowed on campus.
  4. Students must wear shoes at all times. No house shoes, cleats, flipflops, or shoes with wheels are to be worn.
  5. Midriffs must be covered at all times, whether sitting or standing and shirts must have straps large enough to cover a bra strap.
  6. Tops that are strapless, backless, off shoulder, halters, transparent tubes, tank tops and crop tops should not be worn.
  7. No student will wear boxers exposed.
  8. Slacks, pants, designer jogging pants jeans, and trousers are appropriate; however they must be worn at the waist in a fitting fashion. Sagging will NOT be allowed.
  9. Other styles of apparel, i.e., shorts, culottes, skirts, dresses, etc. must be worn within mid thigh length. Cutoffs, bicycle shorts, athletic shorts and boxers are not allowed.
  10. Clothing that has been altered by cutting, tearing, shreading, or unpatched holes will not be allowed.

Please Note:

Students will be advised to wear tennis shoes for physical education. Students should not wear flip flops, sandals or boots. This is for the safety of our students. Students choosing to wear, sandals or boots will walk during their physical education class. Girls should wear shorts under their dresses or skirts. Students should be able to play games and run without their pants falling down. Please have your students wear a belt if needed.

HIGH SCHOOL DRESS AND GROOMING

In order to maintain an orderly environment conducive to the attainment of the educational mission and purpose of Gilmer ISD, all students shall be required to conform to a reasonable dress and grooming code. Students will keep themselves neatly groomed and dressed while at school or while attending a school related activity. Grooming and dress that will disturb, interfere with, or detract from the learning process or school activities will not be allowed.

Dress Code:

1. SHIRTS:

All shirts/tops must have sleeves

*all shirts must be tucked into pants, except shirts that are not designed to be tucked in for females. The length of this type shirt cannot extend more than one hand length below the waist or expose the midriff.

*no more than two buttons may be undone (no undergarments or cleavage should be visible)

*no student will wear clothing or jewelry that displays emblems or writings that are disruptive, suggest the use of prohibited substances, or is obscene, vulgar, depicts sex, death, the occult, violence, blood or gore, racial or sexual in nature (Hooters, rebel flags, etc.) or anything deemed inappropriate by school administration

*undershirts are permitted but must be tucked into pants

*hoodies are permitted but the length of the garment may not extend past the fingertips

2. PANTS/SHORTS/SKIRTS:

All pants should be slacks, jeans of the 5-pocket design (ex. basic/standard blue jeans), or nylon wind pants

*a belt must be worn with pants that are designed with belt loops

* no sagging at any time (boxers/undergarments are not to be visible)

*no excessively baggy pants allowed

*no cutoffs, cargo pants, pajama pants, bicycle shorts, or boxers allowed.

*dresses, shorts, culottes, or skirts, and all split garments must be no shorter than four inches above the front and back of the knee as measured from the hem or split to the top of the knee cap.

* no wallet chains, chains on clothing, spiked jewelry, dog collars, spiked collars, or studded collars allowed

3. Clothing that has been altered by cutting, tearing, or shredding will not be allowed. Unpatched holes in clothing are not allowed.

4. Students must wear shoes. No house shoes allowed.

6. No hats, caps, rakes, combs, picks, hoods, sweatbands, bandanas, or any other head coverings allowed.

7. No sunglasses unless a physicians prescription is provided.

8. No student will wear exposed rings, studs, or other jewelry associated with body piercing. No facial jewelry allowed. Students may wear earrings or ear studs.

9. No student will expose a tattoo, jewelry, or wear clothing that displays emblems or writings that are disruptive, obscene, vulgar, depict death, sex, violence, blood, gore, suggests the use of a prohibited substance of any type, or is racial or sexual in nature (Hooters, rebel flags, etc.)

The administration reserves the right to prohibit any clothing or articles of clothing that may be disruptive. The administration may alter this policy for special observances. Neatly groomed and dressed shall be defined as the dress and proper grooming that is standard and conforms to local community and school district standards. If dress or grooming is deemed inappropriate, corrective action will be taken.

Consequences for Dress Code violations:

First Offense: Student will receive a written warning and correct the violation before being allowed to go to class. If the violation cannot be corrected, the student will spend the day in ISS. (In School Suspension)

Second Offense: Parental contact will be made and the student will correct the violation before going to class. If the violation cannot be corrected, the student will spend the day in ISS.

Third Offense: Student will receive one-hour after school detention and correct the violation before being allowed to go to class. If the violation cannot be corrected, the student will spend the day in ISS.

Fourth Offense: Student will receive a two-hour after school detention and student will correct the violation before being allowed to go to class.

Fifth Offense: Studentwill receive a Saturday Detention and student will correct the violation before being allowed to go to class.

Sixth Offense: Student will receive a SAC assignment.

Seventh Offense: Administration discretion.

JUNIOR HIGH DRESS CODE

2009-2010

1. Unnatural hair coloring, hair styles disruptive to the learning environment or hair rollers will not be permitted.

2. No student will wear exposed rings, studs, or other jewelry associated with body piercing. Students may, however, wear earrings or ear studs.

3. Students will keep shirts or tops buttoned. Straps on overalls must be fastened. If a belt is worn, it must remain on your body. No chains on pants or shirts are allowed.

4. Hats, caps, stocking caps, visors, bandanas, or headbands are NOTallowed on campus.

5. Sunglasses will not be permitted unless a physician's prescription is provided.

6. Students must wear shoes at all times. No house shoes are to be worn.

7. No student will wear boxers exposed, shirts or tops that are strapless, backless, off-shoulder, halters, transparent tubes, tank tops, or crop tops. Straps on blouses and dresses must be wide enough to cover bra straps. No skin is to show at the waist or below the arm pit area at any time.

8. Slacks, pants, designer jogging pants, jeans and trousers are appropriate; however they must be worn at the waist in a fitting fashion. Sagging will NOT be allowed. Other styles of apparel, i.e., shorts, culottes, skirts, dresses etc. must be within approximately four inches of the bend of the knee or mid-thigh. Cutoffs, bicycle shorts, athletic shorts and boxers are not allowed.

9. Shirts, slacks, pants, jeans, or trousers that have been altered by cutting, tearing, or shredding will not be worn. Un-patched holes in clothing are not allowed.

10. No student will expose a tattoo that displays emblems or writings that are disruptive, obscene, or vulgar, depict sex, death, the occult, violence, blood or gore, tobacco, controlled substances or alcohol.

11. No student will wear clothing or jewelry that displays emblems or writings that are disruptive, suggests the use of prohibited substances of any type, obscene, vulgar, depict sex, death, the occult, violence, blood or gore.

12. Chains on clothing, dog collars, studded collars, or spiked collars will not be allowed. No jewelry or gloves with spikes will be allowed.

The administration may alter this policy for special observances. Neatly groomed and dressed shall be defined as the dress and proper grooming that is standard and conforms to local community and school district standards.
