Description:

Prepares students to: perform interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communicative tasks within the novice range on the ACTFL Proficiency scale; interpret, exchange, and present, information, concepts and ideas both within the classroom and beyond on a variety of topics including connections to other subject areas; and understand the relationship among the products, practices and perspectives of other cultures. In addition, students develop insight into their own language and culture. All foreign language students must ear minimum grade of “C” in level 1 to take level II of the same language.

Course Standards:

World Languages Modes of Communication
1. Interpretive Listening:
The student will be able to understand and interpret information, concepts, and ideas orally from a variety of culturally authentic sources on a variety of topics in the target language.
2. Interpretive Reading:
The student will be able to understand and interpret information, concepts, and ideas in writing from a variety of culturally authentic sources on a variety of topics in the target language.
3. Interpersonal Communication:
The student will be able to engage in conversations and exchange information, concepts, and ideas orally and in writing with a variety of speakers or readers on a variety of topics in a culturally appropriate context in the target language.
4. Presentational Speaking:
The student will be able to present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners on a variety of topics in a culturally appropriate context in the target language.
5. Presentational Writing:
The student will be able to present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of readers on a variety of topics in a culturally appropriate context in the target language.

Course:
The curriculum we will be using is proficiency based and derived from JCPS World Language curriculum maps and ACTFL standards. The curriculum map for Spanish 1 is attached below. . Instructional materials include a variety of authentic audio and/or video recordings that develop student’s abilities. The teacher uses the internet to get international audio clips, view interviews, and new broadcasts. Movie clips in Spanish about the Spanish-speaking world are shown to the class.
In addition we will use Descubre 1(textbook), Vista Higher Learning and Learning Site for supplemental grammar and listening activities. “Descubre”, Vista Higher Learning, provide an excellent selection of literature works, poetry, newspaper articles, Web sites, and magazines. Each unit will have “I can” learning objectives along with weekly proficiency based assessments on listening, reading, writing and speaking,
Web-site Resources:
-Conjuguemos: : Each week students will have a quiz on unit vocabulary. The quiz will be context based not just spelling and word recognition. Students will use this website to master the spelling and vocabulary of each word. This will always be a homeworkgrade.
-Quia: : This is another homework and review website the students will use in particular to
master grammar and vocabulary.
-Lingt Language:: : This is a website where students will work on their Interpretive
Listening andand interpersonal speaking skills. In order to use this site, students need a headset with an audio
recording device to be kept at home.

Assessment:

Students will be assessed according to the school’s grading system, as outlined below. Additionally, students will have at least one weekly quiz in addition to at least one homework assignment a week (most homework will come from completing something assigned during class time). Additional grades will come from performance based assessments and assessments via project based learning.

Your grade is made up of the following:

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: Your Keys To Success

1- Respect others. Listen when others are talking; keep hands, feet, objects and negative comments to yourself. Follow directions.

2- Raise your hand to be recognized before speaking or standing up from your seat.

3- Bring required materials to class every day. (No food or electronic devices)

4- Follow the Beechwood High School Code of Conduct.

5- Turn in completed assignments and homework on time.

Tardies: Come into the classroom through the door (over the threshold) before the bell rings. Student must have a note to enter the room late. If not, s/he will be sent to the office and return with a note.

Consequences for not Meeting Classroom Expectations

  • 1st Consequence – Verbal warning and / or parent contact (phone call or e-mail)
  • 2nd Consequence –Teacher Detention. Parent contact will be at least 24 hours prior to scheduled detention. Detention will be thirty minutes before or after school.
  • 3rd Consequence – Referral to the administration

Depending on the severity of the classroom disruption or behavior, the teacher may bypass consequences listed above.

● If you come to class unprepared, I will follow the sameprocedures for tardiness listed above.

● There are NO LOCKER PASSES, no exceptions!! You must come to class prepared. As a teacher you expect me to be prepared with materials, and I expect the same from you.

● You will be given FOUR restroom passes to each quarter. You must sign in and out on the clip- board located on the chalkboard. You will not be allowed more than four passes. If you have a medical emergency that requires restroom usage on a regular basis, you MUST have a doctor’s note on file in the nurse’s office and on YOU at all times.

●Cell phones must be turned off and be put away out of sight. I will follow school policy regarding cell phone violations. Sometimes in class we may use cell phones for educational purposes such as searching QR codes, recording speaking activities, etc. The teacher will make it clear when these times are permitted. All cell phone infractions that distract the student from learning will result in confiscation of cell phone by myself and turned into administration.

LATE WORK POLICY

● If you are absent for a test day, you must make it up the day after you get back to school. The test score will stay a zero until it is made up.

● You may ONLY make up homework/graded assignments if it is an EXCUSED absence (See student handbook). They will stay a zero until it is made up.

● Each project that is turned in late will be minus 10 points for every day that it is late. This does not pertain to daily homework but to unit projects.

Academic Dishonesty:

Students are expected to be honest and ethical in their academic work. Academic dishonesty is defined as an intentional act of deception in one of the following areas:

1. Cheating- use or attempted use of information or study aids during testing.

2. Fabrication- falsification or invention of any information.

3. Assisting- helping another student commit an act of academic dishonesty.

4. Tampering- altering or interfering with evaluation instruments and documents.

5. Plagiarism- representing the words or ideas as one’s own.(Includes ON-line Translators)

TUTORING: I am more than willing to meet before or after school for additional help to improve your Spanish skills. You need to set up an appointment with me ahead of time, at least one day prior. I will always have test reviews after school that will be announced before the test via the parent newsletter.

EXTRA CREDIT: Opportunities will be offered for each quarter. If the student is missing any work, they cannot ask for additional extra credit opportunities.

REMIND:

This is a FREE website where I can send reminders via text message to students and parents regarding daily homework, assignments and tests. No, this is not my actual phone number, so you cannot respond back. Rather, it is a fun and easy way to get updates in this class. I will send homework and other updates after school at 3:05.

**If students fail to sign up for this, it is their responsibility to write down assignments in their agenda book!
