ENGAGE
Monday: No School
Tuesday/Wednesday: Review basic addition with students. The digital lesson opener can be used with a whole class or with a small group. Model the numbers in the opener using two color counters or counting cubes. Students will have the opportunity o return to the opening scenario and answer the question in the first Daily Assessment Task. Introduce +1 Math Facts
Thursday/Friday: Assess prior knowledge of putting together numbers. Have students use 9 counters to model the possible groups of trucks in the problem. Students will return to the task in the first Daily Assessment. / Use the Digital Lesson by accessing the Student e-Edition.
Materials:
MathBoard, red and blue crayons, red and blue connecting cubes
Vocabulary:

Order
EXPLORE
Monday: No School
Tuesday/Wednesday: Read a problem aloud. Have students use read and blue connecting cubs to model the addition expressions and find the sums. Then have students draw the cubes to show their work. Have students say both complete addition sentences.
Thursday/Friday: Read a problem aloud to the class. Have students start by building a cube train of 5 red connecting cubes. Have students color the first cube train on their page red. Have them continue using red cubes and blue cubes to show different ways to make 5, and coloring the cube trains on their page to show each way. Remind children that they can change the order of the addends to show a different way to make 5. / Use math talk to focus on student’s understanding of adding in any order. You may wish to tell students that when they add in any order, they are using the Commutative Property.
EXPLAIN
Monday: No School
Tuesday/Wednesday: Work through the model and the pictures with students. Have students write the addition sentence for the model on the right. In exercises 1-3, using cubes, students find the sum and color the cubes to match. Then students change the order of the addends, color the cubes to match, and write the addition sentence.
Thursday/Friday: Read the problem aloud. Guide students through the model by asking questions and connecting their answers to the number sentences show. In Exercises 3-10, children use connecting cubes to model all the ways to make 9. Then they color the cube trains on their page to show the ways. Exercises 3 and 4 are partially completed with blue cubes. Students should color the remaining cubes read to make 9. / Have the children complete the exercises on the MathBoard.
Use the checked exercises for a Quick Check to assess for Differentiated Instruction.
Remind students of the parts for an addition sentence. The addends can change order, not the sum.
ELABORATE
Monday: No School.
Tuesday/Wednesday: If students answered the checked exercises correctly, assign the exercises on page 141. Make sure students understand that after finding each sum in a row, they should circle the two addition sentences that have the same addends in a different order (Commutative Property).
Thursday/Friday: If students answered the checked exercises correctly, assign the exercise on page 147. / To extend thinking, have students write a story problem about the brown and tan cats. Encourage them to write the problem on their MathBoards and share it with the class.
EVALUATE
Tuesday/Wednesday: Daily Assessment Task, pg 142. Complete Enrich 19 for a Daily Grade. On page 143, complete problems 1 and 2 together, send the rest of front and back home for Homework.
