Welcome
“The very warmest of welcomes to Macclesfield’s Barnaby Festival 2016. We’re back with a bang: this year’s programme includes over 100 events across 10 midsummer days, over 60 of which are completely free. Celebrating the 70th anniversary of Macclesfield’s own Jodrell Bank, our theme this year is Space in all its manifestations.
Professor Tim O’Brien’s ‘In Conversation’ with Professor Brian Cox promises to be a highlight, but it’s just one of the many science projects throughout the programme: from Space School to Solar Gazing and a galaxy of other absorbing events.
Barnaby wouldn’t be Barnaby without its Parade, which blasts off at 1pm on Sat 18th June. This year, it’s going to be ‘out of this world’, with all manner of space-related creatures roaming the streets of Macc. And we’re over the moon to announce that well over half of our programme has been made in partnership with local artists and businesses, who’ve created work that shines a new light on the town we love.
Music’s always been at the heart of the Festival, and this year we welcome back Stephen Morris (New Order), who’s on the decks at our ‘Gimp Twister’ Music Lounge over the rest weekend. Don’t miss the chance to see John Bramwell and Sam Duckworth in a unique double bill, and check out the wonderfully intimate performances in people’s homes that make up our Secret Concert Series.
Once again, our Visual Art programme is world- class. Bedwyr Williams and Hondartza Fraga are both making work in Macclesfield, to be showcased across the Festival period, with Liliane Lijn and Hannah Imlach joining four local artists to produce new commissions in locations across the town.
And there’s still more: BBC’s Nick Robinson joins us, coming back to his home- town to give us a unique perspective on the politics of today. Comedian Francesca Martinez brings us her Wobbly Manifesto show in a UK premiere, and we’re delighted to be working with Festival Artist in Residence: writer and poet Ailsa Holland.
La Lune, possibly the biggest family spectacle ever seen in Macc, has been commissioned and produced for Barnaby by the renowned Wild Rumpus company. The adventure begins with the wonderful and moving ‘Astronomer’s Story’ on the first weekend, with amazing mysterious and interactive happenings all week, and a breathtaking finale.
Finally, I want to express my deep gratitude to the wonderful Festival team and all the incredible volunteers who have worked tirelessly to bring this year’s amazing Festival to life. And of course our sincere thanks to everyone – from Macclesfield, and further afield – who’s joining us to make Barnaby 2016 a true celebration. Space for Debate with Nick Robinson
