LESSON PURPOSE:

The purpose of this lesson is for cadets to learn the principles of instruction and understand how they are applied in each lesson.

STUDENT OUTCOMES:

Cadets will apply the principles of instruction in planning a lesson.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:

This is the first lesson of instructional techniques.

LESSON:

Part I: Introduction

What: Principles of instruction and how to apply them to your lessons

Why: You need to know how to apply the principles of instruction in order to make your classes more enjoyable and successful for your students. Being able to use these principles will make classes a more enjoyable learning experience for your cadets.

Where: You will be teaching a 15 min lesson to your peers at the end of this PO as the evaluation for this PO. You will also have opportunities to instruct your peers in less formal settings as you progress through this level and level 4.

Part II: Instructional Strategies

Stage 1: The Principles of Instruction

Go through ICEPAC asking students to give an example of something they have seen in a lesson that would follow this principle.

Interest – Create and maintain interest

Comprehension – the cadets need to be able to understand the material

Emphasis – emphasize important information through voice control, training aids, and activities

Participation – Cadets are more likely to retain information if they are mentally and physically involved

Accomplishment – Cadets should feel as though they accomplished something during the lesson

Confirmation–Check to see that the information was understood

Stage 2: Activity – Applying the Principles of Instruction

Set up six learning stations (spread out around the classroom) prior to the class. Explain the activity and pass out required handouts.

Break up the cadets into six groups. Groups will rotate through stations and complete the worksheets as a group. Discuss ideas and results as a class once rotation is complete.

CLOSURE:

Have studentsdevelop actions to help remember the principles of instruction. Have them display their actions to the class in groups.

AUTHENTIC STUDENT ASSESSMENT:

Students will be assessed on their participation in the lesson but formal assessment will take place in the PO Check at the end of the PO where they will instruct a 15 minute lesson to their peers.
