CLASS TITLE:ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN II

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is skilled paraprofessional engineering work performing technical duties in the application of moderately advanced engineering or surveying skills and techniques; performing varied and moderately difficult technical work gathering, combining, and analyzing traffic and roadway data; reviewing title evidence, preparing moderately complex legal descriptions of real property, and plotting parcel boundary lines on right-of-way maps; performing technical drafting work in the preparation of plans, maps, and other illustrative materials; or performing other comparable field, office, or laboratory work.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Operates a level on a field survey crew and performs routine level instrument work.
  • Makes field and laboratory tests and obtains representative samples of construction materials for testing laboratory.
  • Inspects grading work for proper materials, moisture content, width, grade and drainage; inspects surfacing work for proper width, depth, moisture, and amount of material; and inspects construction of structures for proper alignment, grade and reinforcement.
  • Conducts turning movement, stop and delay, and/or speed zone studies; travels highways with an odometer-equipped vehicle checking and plotting the exact location of all roads, cultural points, and basic topographical features for the purpose of updating county and city maps; calculates traffic estimations for long-range urban highway planning; and designs simple channelization or assists a signal layout designer with complicated signal and channelization layouts.
  • Reduces survey notes and plots and checks cross sections, center lines, and grade; computes excavation and fill, percentage of grade, and elevations; and transfers proposed grades to cross section sheets, and plots proposed templates.
  • Reviews title evidence, prepares moderately complex legal descriptions of real property and plots parcel boundary lines on right-of-way maps.
  • Prepares and maintains maps and charts indicting the location and/or proposed locations of sewage systems and public water systems.
  • Assists in the design and construction of basic digital and analog electronic equipment.
  • Maintains current accurate septic tank subdivision files.
  • Investigates subdivisions which utilize septic tanks for means of sewage disposal.
  • Investigates public swimming pools and bathing places.
  • Operates air sampling monitor.
  • Issues septic tank permits.
  • Assists in the installation of tide gages and the construction of geodetic quality monuments.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the basic procedures of drafting, surveying, architecture and/or other engineering related areas.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Skill in using engineering, drafting, architectural or surveying tools, equipment, and/or instruments.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions.
  • Ability to understand maps, work plans and/or other engineering data.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and one year of technical engineering, drafting, architectural or surveying experience.
  • College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for the year of required experience provided such education includes four courses in drafting, mathematics, electronics, architecture, the physical or natural sciences, or an area of engineering.
  • Vocational/technical training in one of the areas described above can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for the year of required experience.
