E-reader (Kindle Fire, NOOK, Android) Download
The following directions should be used for all e-readers other than iPad, such as the Kindle Fire, NOOK and Android among others.
To start, you need to log onto your personal MyiLibrary account on your PC or laptop. If you need to create an account, follow the steps below. Go to to set up or access your personal MyiLibrary account AND find titles to download.
For off-campus access, conduct your search in the usual way within StranCat. When you have selected a title click on the “connect to MyiLibrary Resource” button. You will then be prompted to enter your Stranmillis username and password.
Creating a Personal MyiLibrary Account
From the “My Account” option at the top of the page, select “Login”
The “Login” page will appear. On this page, you will see the following three options:
- “Login to Your Account”
- “Forgot Your Password”
- “Create an Account” (this is the link you need to select)
Enter your e-mail address. An e-mail from MyiLibrary is sent shortly, containing the password (unique to you). You will then use this password to login to your personal MyiLibrary account.
Adding a Title to Bookshelf for Download
There are several ways to search for titles. In this example, we utilized the “Advanced Search” feature.
- Enter as few or as many search parameters as desired to find titles.
- The last parameter is an option for “Available for Download”; selecting this will limit results to content available for download.
- Start the search to retrieve results.
Once the search results appear, you can use filters to narrow down the results.
When you locate the desired title, you have several options:
- Title Link: Clicking on the title link will take you to the title’s “Product Detail” page.
- Open Now: Clicking “Open Now” will take you to the online viewer (link is also on the “Product Detail” page)
- Add to Bookshelf for Download: Clicking “Add to Bookshelf for Download” will add the title to the patron’s bookshelf, which is where downloadable titles are stored (link is also on the “Product Detail” page)
You may add a maximum of 2 titles to your bookshelf for download, or you may continue on to your bookshelf to begin the download process. Please note that not all title are available to download.
Using the “My Account” link, access the “Bookshelf” to begin the download process.
Downloading a Title
- On the “Bookshelf” page, you can find your current downloadable titles along with historical downloads.
- If you decide not to download a particular title, you may remove the title from your bookshelf via the “Remove” button; this is only available if you have not already downloaded the title.
- Once the title is downloaded (even once), the “Remove” button disappears.
- Titles cannot be returned early, so you must wait until the rental time expires before the title is returned to the library.
- To begin the download process, click the “Download” button associated with the desired title.
After clicking “Download” to begin download process, your computer will prompt you to either Open or Save the .ACSM file.
- Open the .ACSM file: If you already have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer, then the file should open automatically in Adobe Digital Editions.
- Save the .ASCM file: If you do not have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer, you will need to download and install the application and register your e-mail; Adobe Digital Editions is found at:
- If you do not have administrative rights on your PC you will need an administrator to install the software.
Once the .ACSM file completes its download, Adobe Digital Editions will open.
You will be prompted to authorize your computer.
You can also authorize your computer by going to “Help/Authorize Computer”.
You can now transfer the MyiLibrary e-book to your Kindle Fire, NOOK, e-reader or Android device.
Transferring Titles to Device
To move the MyiLibrary e-book to the device, you must connect the device to the computer via USB cable.
Adobe Digital Editions will recognize the device and you will see it displayed under Devices on the left side of the screen on the Adobe Digital Editions program.
You will also need to authorize your device. To do this click on the name of your device then click on the gear icon, and on “Authorize Device”.
You should see the Adobe ID you authorized your computer with listed as the default ID. Click on the “Authorize Device” button.
To transfer the title, you will “drag and drop” the e-book to the device.
Adobe Digital Editions will show a “Copying Documents” screen; once that completes, the e-book is now copied to your device.
The e-book will remain on the device for the specified lending period.
Once you are finished with the title or the lending period expires, you will have to delete the title from the device (it will not automatically disappear).
Troubleshooting
While MyiLibrary e-books can be viewed on a Kindle Fire, using the Bluefire Reader app, this app is unavailable for download via the Amazon App Store. Interested users must download the Bluefire Reader app using the instructions found here:
(
Please note that MyiLibrary allows you to download the same e-book multiple times, to multiple devices, as long as the Adobe ID matches the Adobe ID that was originally used to open the e-book.
For example:
- Bob Smith downloads an e-book from MyiLibrary onto his Kindle Fire and authorizes the e-book with his Adobe ID. He then gives his login information to his friend to download to his friend’s NOOK. The e-book won’t open because the Adobe IDs don’t match. Until the lending period expires, that e-book will only be available for downloading and reading by Bob Smith’s Adobe ID.
- However, if Bob Smith downloads an e-book from MyiLibrary onto his Kindle Fire and authorizes the book with his Adobe ID, then decides he also wants to download it to his PC, the book will open because the Adobe IDs match.
You can activate up to 6 computers and devices with your Adobe ID. For more information on this and Adobe Digital Editions please see the FAQ at:
