Georg Charles de Hevesy Nuclear Pioneer Award

Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Gerd Muehllehner, Ph.D. has been awarded the Year 2001 Georg Charles de Hevesy Nuclear Medicine Pioneer Award. This annual award is presented by the Society of Nuclear Medicine to an individual for outstanding scientific achievement using radioactive material in Nuclear Medicine. The Award is named after Dr. Georg de Hevesy, the father of nuclear medicine, winner of the 1943 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and the author of several important books and papers on radiochemistry.

Dr. Muehllehner was honored for his extraordinary accomplishments as a physicist and developer of innovative instrumentation for both gamma cameras and positron emission tomography (PET) scanners. Dr. Muehllehner is Director of PET Research and Development at ADAC UGM, a division of Philips Medical Systems, and Professor of Radiologic Physics at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. His accomplishments include seminal innovations in collimation techniques, transmission scanning and image reconstruction, coincidence imaging and treatment of 3D PET data. He holds a number of patents as a result of his work, has published numerous papers, and is the eighth most frequently cited author in IEEE Transactions in Medical Imaging.

The Georg Charles de Hevesy Nuclear Pioneer Award recipient is chosen by the SNM President. It was presented at the 48th Annual Conference of the Society of Nuclear Medicine during the Plenary Session on Sunday, June 24, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Award was presented by Joel Karp, PhD, Professor of Radiologic Physics, University of Pennsylvania.
