Clutch Plate Bracket Stress Analysis
Introduction
This HW develops your skills in applying CosmosWorks to redesign a part.
Model Description
This is a model of a clutch plate bracket. The goal is to reduce the weight of the bracket while maintaining its functionality.
· Download the file ‘Clutchplate’ into your SolidWorks session.
Apply Restraints:Select the two faces as shown in the figure and RMB on Loads/Restraint and select OK to fix the faces. /
Apply Load:
Select the cylindrical face as shown in the figure and then RMB on Loads/Restraint and select Force. /
In the Force dialog box, select Apply force/moment. Select the units as English (IPS). Check the item Normal to the plane and input a value of –1000 lb. Select OK. /
Apply Mesh control to refine the mesh in the localized areas of the arm holes:
Select the two highlighted faces and RMB on Mesh. Select Apply Control. In the mesh control dialog box, input an element size value of 0.1 in. Select OK.Use the default value for the global mesh size. /
/ Ignoring the localized effect of the Restraints, the maximum Von Mises stress in the model should be around 18 ksi. The part is made of Alloy Steel. Assuming a factor of safety of 2, the maximum stress in the model should not exceed the allowable stress of 45 ksi (90 ksi (yield stress)/2 ). Change the Angle between 145, 180 to minimize the max Von Mises is just below the allowable stress.
Report:
Using Excel, record all your trials, Angles and Max Von Mises stress values to be handed in. Label all information, including the original design and subsequent trials. Include your stress plots for
· original run,
· final run,
· and an intermediate run.
