Dear Owners and Residents,

Saturday, Feb 24th, at around 12:30 a.m., there was an explosion and flash firein the rear stairwell of building 1485. The cause is suspicious in nature, and it appears that an accelerant was involved. An investigation was commenced, and is in progress. Thank God, no one was seriously hurt or worse. The Palatine Fire department, Police department and Crime Scene Investigation Unit (CSI) were on the scene within minutes, and remained for most of the morning. Association staff arrived on the scene around 12:45, coordinated with Village officials, and arranged for the displaced residents to congregate in the Clubhouse, where they were kept warm and together during the event. Palatine officials took statements from all who were in the clubhouse. At app 4:30 a.m., the residents were given the all clear to return to their Units.

During this period, Association representatives, including the Board president, maintenance staff and a PSI representative coordinated actions with the Village, arranged for emergency safety clean-up, board-up service, entry door repairs and ensured that all Units had functioning security locks (most entry doors had been damaged during the evacuation process). By 7:30 a.m., all of these critical response priorities had been met.

The damage to the building is quite extensive, and includes fire and smoke damage, and numerous displacements and cracks in walls caused by the overpressure from the explosion. Structurally, the Palatine Fire Department has deemed the building sound for residency, but just about every Unit has sustained damage, and the back stairwell will require major repairs and renovations, as will the common hallways, carpets, walls etc.

The documentation of the damage was begun immediately, the Association insurance carrier notified, and all appropriate steps taken to ensure and expedite the repairs. Your Board asks all Owners and residents of Brentwood to pray for the residents of 1485, give thanks that no one was severely injured or worse, and express gratitude for the quick, professional and expert skills of the Palatine Police and Fire departments for the services they performed for our neighbors and fellow residents.

This incident is very troubling to all of us; residents, Owners, the Association, your Board and management. It illustrates the need for all of the residents of Brentwood to be active participants in the safety and security of our property. We all must exercise vigilance and due diligence with regards for not only the buildings where we reside, but for the property as a whole. It is very important to know your neighbors, for the residents of each building to work together for the safety of each other, to be aware of what goes on within our buildings and to be active members of the community. There are some basic and easy steps we all can take to immediately increase our security:

Don’t let anyone into your building if you don’t know him or her.

Don’t allow anyone to enter with you when you enter your building.

If you notice ANY suspicious persons or actions, call the police immediately.

Be aware of your surroundings, and take notice of things that seem to be out of the ordinary, or unusual, and report them.

Always remember that Brentwood is OUR property, whether we own our Units or lease. We are all residents, and all of us must understand and realize that, and take the appropriate level of ownership for our property.

On the last Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m., the Building Representative Committee will hold it’s monthly meeting. If you have not already joined the committee, please do so. Involvement in our community is critical to the success of our investments and the safety and security of our neighborhood. The events related to 1485 will be the primary topic at the meeting, and procedures and policies will be outlined to assist residents with increasing the participation and awareness levels. Building security, any possible improvements which can be made, and any actions that the Association can take will be open to all suggestions and ideas. Don’t take for granted that someone else will contribute from your building. Don’t assume that you don’t have useful ideas, or can’t contribute to the committee. Please get involved.

Sincerely,

Brentwood of Palatine
