COURSE REQUIREMENTS/SYLLABUS
PHYSICAL EDUCATION, HEALTH, AND DRIVER’S EDUCATION

CLASSROOM
*Uniform: If a student is not in uniform, he/she cannot participate and will receive a zero for the day
- Athletic footwear only: sneakers and socks
- T-Shirts or Sweatshirts(Dark colors preferred)
- Gym shorts, spandex, or wind pants(Dark colors preferred)
- No pajamas, no jewelry, no gum, no boots, no rubber soled shoes, no platform sneakers
- Any student who wears their school clothes under their gym uniform will be considered unprepared and will receive a zero for the day. They will not be allowed to participate or change once the instructor is aware of the infraction.
*All students must participate unless excused by a doctor’s note or the school nurse. Any student who is medically excused from gym will be required to go to the library (if available) or stay on the stage away from the activity to prevent further injury.
*Do not give out your locker combination
*If a student comes late and the class has already gone outside to the park, the student must stay inside and report to the main office. School policy is enforced regarding the rules for an unexcused late
*No student may leave the gym or field during class unless given permission by Mrs. Cuesta-Aviles
Safety Regulations
All safety equipment and protective gear, such as goggles, facemasks, and shin guards have to be used for related games and activities. All students must adhere to all safety rules and regulations and use common sense regarding safety. The teacher must be notified immediately of any broken equipment or unforeseen hazard. No Horseplay Allowed. Students must follow fire drill exit procedures (which are posted near each door) when the alarm is sounding. Absolutely no food or drinks in the gym.
Warm-Up Exercises
Appropriate warm-up exercises are presented to each class before full-scale activity begins. The conditioning exercises are aimed at preventing accidents by preparing the body for more strenuous activity. The exercises should be physiologically, anatomically, and kinesthetically sound. Everyone must participate. All students will be required to participate in the Fitnessgram (or similar program) during the beginning and end of the school year.

Grading
Total periods of instruction will be such that a student receives 135 (3 Marking Levels) of physical education and 45 periods of health or each year course. The health course for each grade level is to be graded separately from the Physical Education course; however, the combined final average must be 60 or better in order to pass Health & Physical Education and meet requirements for graduation. Physical education grades are determined by a points system. The final grade is determined by the following scale:
A+ / 98-100A / 92-97
A- / 90-91
B+ / 86-89

C+ / 76-79
C / 72-75
C- / 70-71
D / 65-69
F / Below 65
Minimum Grade 50
3 days late are equivalent to one absence, which results in points deduction from participation grade. Once a student accumulated 3 zeros a parent/guardian will be called and the student will be sent to the principal’s office. A student will start each marking level with 100 call participation points. If a student is late, he/she will lose a point; if a student is absent they will lose 2 points. Students medically excused from Physical Education classes will be required to update and keep doctor’s note on file in the nurse’s office.
*All 10th grade students are required to take Drivers Education, which includes the state exam only
** Any student with asthma, diabetes, or any other health restrictions will need to notify the school nurse of their condition.
