Of Mice and Men: Part 3
Slim and George talk and George tells Slim all about Lennie and why he looks after him. Slim has given Lennie one of his puppies. Lennie wants to keep it with him but George makes him take it back to its mother because it is too young.
Carlson and Candy come in. Carlson persuades Candy to let him shoot his dog because it is old and ill.
A man called Whit plays cards with George. They talk about Curley’s wife, and about the girls in the town. George says he might go into town with the other men on Saturday night, but he will not spend much money because he and Lennie are trying to save their money.
Slim goes to the barn to look after one of the horses. Curley comes looking for his wife. He asks for Slim and goes off to see if his wife and Slim are together. Whit thinks there will be a fight and goes to watch.
George and Lennie stay in the bunk house. They talk again about the house they want to buy. Candy is listening. Candyasks if he can come too. He offers them $350 to help them buy the house. They decide to work for one more month on the ranch and then go and buy the house.
Slim, Curley, Whit and Carlson come back in. Curley and Slim are arguing. Lennie smiles (thinking about the house) and Curley gets angry with him. Curley hits Lennie on his nose and then in his stomach. Lennie does not want to fight but George tells him to. He grabs Curley’s hand and crushes it.
The other men tell Lennie it is not his fault. Slim makes Curley promise not to tell his father that Lennie hurt his hand. They will all say he caught his hand in a threshing machine.
