Controversial Question:Does globalization benefit the United States of America?
THESIS:How globalization benefits the United States of America is from an increase in job opportunities, an increase in business markets and a positive impact from imports.
Argument 1:All the citizens of the United States of America are beneficiaries from the increase in job opportunities made by globalization.
- Unemployment is at its lowest in 30 years at a staggering 4.9% (January 2008 Statistics).[1]
- An increase of imports and exports allows for more career options for the citizens of the nation. Countries such as Canada, China, Mexico, Japan, United Kingdom and France are some of the top trading partners for the US. They also have relatively low unemployment rate, less than 10%.[2]
- Twenty million new jobs have been made from 1993 to 2000 which is statistically more than Western Europe and Japan combined.[3]
- Statistics have shown that a sharp increase in imports is paralleled to sharp increase in US employment rate. This shows that imports do benefit the US citizens.[4]
- Globalization has been proven to increase the annual US income to approximately $1 trillion, which is basically on average $10, 000 more per family[5].
- Thirty years ago, 70% to 80% of jobs were agricultural based. Currently, 3% to 4% of jobs come from this stream of occupations.[6]
- Trade supports 1 out 5 jobs in the US[7].
Argument 2:One of the main purposes of globalization is that it would increase the amount of customers to sell to.
- The consumers of the US can be beneficial because with having these products made by more skilled and knowledge workers, the final products would turn out more reliable with a better quality. [8]
- Another important aspect of outsourcing is that with having products being produced in other nations allows the production to increase because of the different time zones.
- Allows for faster deliveries to customers.
- UPS can sell their products worldwide with deliveries at a cheaper and effective process
- All types of American businesses can use the UPS system of business
- “One has to realize that the powerful industrial groups concerned in the manufacture of arms are doing their best in all countries to prevent the peaceful settlement of international disputes, and that rulers can achieve this great end only if they are sure of the vigorous support of the majority of their peoples.”[9]
Argument 3:Competition can lead to businesses striving for goals and to aim higher.
- Competition can lead to businesses striving for goals and to aim higher.
- Allows businesses to increase their productivity and outlook of their own product compared to those from other nations.
- “What globalization means in our view…Or the 70 percent of our small business customers who tell us that they’ve seen an increase in sales due to their web presence. These same customers tell us that nearly 40 percent of their online sales come from brand new customers.”[10]
- Having imports in a country benefit the citizens because it allows them to have cheaper products from similar businesses.[11]
- Encourages businesses to increase their productivity and become a better and successful business compared to their competition.[12]
- A sharp increase in imports are paralleled to sharp increase in US employment rate[13]
