As a participant, I will attend the activities as scheduled, I will arrive on time, and I will put forth my best effort as a participant. I understand that continued participation in STEP requires a commitment that I attend the program sessions regularly and on time. I will accept tutoring by the STEP staff, will cooperate with instructors, tutors, and administrative staff, and will participate in field trips, seminars, and other events. I understand that students are allowed no more than two absences in the summer. Once a student is removed from the program, the only way to rejoin will be through a scheduled interview with the director before the following semester.

SUMMER 2014 COURSE SELECTION SHEET

All Day Class Tracks (9:30am – 2pm):

___ Track 1: Earth and Physical Science 7th & 8th Grades For the first two weeks, students will create a 12X12 inch 2 model of a biome of the student’s choosing. Before the construction portion of the project, students will collectively research and brainstorm about the characteristics of the 5 major biomes. For the last half of the class students will focus on electricity and electronics with a focus on learning how to use basic electrical tools to construct projects.

___ Track 2: Engineering Principles of Bridges 9th & 10th Grades

This course involves trips to Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge to study the architecture and engineering of the bridges and arches. Mathematical concepts will be explored and applied to build several structures that will be field tested for stability and practicality. The class will culminate in prototype bridges that will be tested for usability, strength and aesthetic grace. The class will be a synthesis of engineering bridges that incorporates literature, art and NYC history.

___ Track 3: Research Methods for the Social Sciences 10th & 11th Grades

Students will develop knowledge and skills in psychological research, including hypothesis development, research design, data analysis, and scientific writing. Students will be expected to research a specific topic, independently or within a group, for the entire month. After research and data collection, the students work will culminate in posters that will be presented at the end of the class and continue with upcoming conferences throughout the year.

___ Track 4: Biological Systems 11th & 12th Grades

This intensive, exploratory general science course will expose students to the fields of anatomy, biology, environmental science and ecology as well as the economic and political influences on biological systems. Students will perform laboratory experiments, attend various field trips throughout the city and participate in group and individual project presentations. Guest speakers from various scientific fields will periodically speak with the students about obtaining careers in science.
