Welcome!

We are very excited that you have chosen to participate in the Teen Sacramental Preparation program at St. Mary Magdalene! Using a curriculum entitled Chosen from Ascension Press weare committed to creating an environment for continued conversion and spiritual growth. In order to assure that your teen gets the most benefit from these classes we ask that you abide by the policies described below.

Program Expectations

Attendance policy

Classes will be held from 7:00-8:30pm on Mondays in the Frassati Room (unless otherwise indicated). Attendance is mandatory, as this is the direct preparation for reception of the Sacraments. In the event of an emergency where your teen misses class, they will be sent a make up assignment to complete before they attend the next scheduled class. Students are not permitted to miss more than 3 classes. Some sacrifice will be required in order to ensure proper formation prior to receiving the sacraments. Please make the commitment to be there for every class.Teens who do not make up missed classes or miss more than 3 classes will not receive credit for the completion of the program. This means that reception of the Sacrament may be delayed until the following year. A Schedule can be found at the end of this document.

Teens:

Must display an openness of heart through:

·A one-on-one First Interview prior to the start of classes and a Pre-Confirmation Interview.

·A Commitment to daily prayer

·Sunday Mass attendance

·Attendance at Monday night sessions (on time!)

·Involvement in the youth group (GS24)

·Participation in service opportunities

·Preparation and delivery of a Saint Presentation

·Reconciliation prior to Confirmation (If already Baptized)

*Teens will be required to sign a Candidate Commitment Form during their First Interview to give their consent to the above expectations.

Youth Group Involvement:

It is important for the teens of our parish, especially those in preparation to receive Sacraments, to start to develop a sense of community and a pattern of active involvement in the life of the Church. Each teen’s presence, personality, and unique gifts are an essential and needed part of the community! For these reason, teens in Sacramental Prep are required to attend a minimum of 16 youth nights (at least 2 per month) throughout the school year. Participation in Spring retreat during this school year and a Service Project will also be required. The High School Youth Group meets on most Sunday nights throughout the school year, from 5:45-7:30pm in the Frassati Room. More information is provided on the parish website, the bulletin, frequent E-Newsletter and:

Parents:

Parents are the primary educators in the faith. Parents discern the readiness of their children to prepare for and celebrate the sacraments in consultation with the Coordinator of High School Evangelization. The Catechism calls the family “the domestic church” (see CCC 1658) because it is primarily within the family that a teen will learn how to live a life of faith. In an effort to model the life of faith to the best of your ability, parents are expected to:

  1. Attend Sunday Mass as a family
  2. Model a commitment to personal prayer, community, worship, and ministry expected of a mature Christian.
  3. Assist their child to meet the attendance and service requirements.
  4. Pray for and with the candidate and show willingness to share in their faith journey.

Fee:

The cost of enrollment is $50.00 per participant. This covers all materials and resources utilized and given out during the program. A Separate fee will be required for participation in a retreat. There is no registration fee for participation in the high school youth group.

Sponsor:

Every candidate will have one sponsor who will present the candidate for the receipt of the Sacraments. It is preferable that the baptismal godparents, as extensions of the spiritual family, continue this role at Confirmation though not necessary. However, teens do not need to know their sponsor prior to starting this program, nor do sponsors need to be family members. We are happy to find an eligible sponsor for you if you do not know anyone who meets the requirements. However, sponsors should be actively involved in the child’s life of faith before, during, and after receiving the Sacrament(s). Once you have chosen a sponsor they must obtain a letter of good standing from the parish where they are registered stating that they are active, contributing members of the community and eligible to be a sponsor. Sponsors will be expected to be present on all scheduled SPONSOR NIGHTS to discuss that night’s topic with their candidate and to pray with them. If the sponsor cannot be there, the teen will be given a Sponsor Sheet with the night’s discussion questions and will have a conversation with their sponsor, on their own time, prior to the next class.

The Qualifications for a Sponsor are as follows:

·Must be at least 16 years old

·May not be the natural or adoptive parents of the confirmand/catechumen

·Must be fully initiated into the Catholic Faith (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist)

·Must be living a life in harmony with the teachings of the Faith

·Must be free of any canonical impediment

It is recommended that someone nearby be chosen as the sponsor. Sponsors are to support their candidate during the preparation process through prayer, words of encouragement, attendance at Monday night sessions, presence at the Sacraments Mass rehearsal, and to present the candidates to the Bishop/delegate during the celebration of the Sacrament(s).

Confirmation Name/Presentation:

The candidate will be asked to select the name of a biblical, beatified, or canonized person as recognized by the Church and is encouraged to consider his or her own Baptismal name, if appropriate. Candidates should be familiar with the life of the patron of their choice and the ways in which this person was a witness to Christ and demonstrated discipleship. The good of this assignment is to provide the teen with another example of a witness to the faith that they can learn from and walk with throughout their spiritual journey.

Each teen will prepare to give a visual and oral presentation about their patron saint during their Pre-Confirmation Interview toward the end of the program. At least 50% of the information presented must be memorized.

The Saint Presentation will include:

·Basic info about the saint– Their birth name, when and where they lived, their family life, their vocation, any religious or secular organizations of which they were a part, etc.

·At least one picture or work of art depicting the saint

·Their designated patronage and why (if known)

·An explanation, in their own words, of ways that this person was a witness to Christ

·An explanation of why they chose this particular saint and why they feel that this saint is a good model of faith for their life

·A quote or prayer from that saint that is representative of their devotion to Christ and His Church

·Anything else that is interesting to include...
