Chapter Seven Apps Corner
Apps Corner is designed for teachers and other educators who are looking for innovative ways to integrate apps into their content-specific curriculum. Apps Corner not only provides great apps with current information but also shows how other educators are using and integrating education apps. As a result, Apps Corner is designed with all educators in mind, regardless of their interests or subject area. You can use Apps Corner to expand your resources by reviewing apps outside your curriculum area; remember many apps associated with one curriculum area can be adapted for use and added to lesson plans in a wide variety of other curriculum areas.
Use Apps Corner as a springboard for collaborating and sharing the successes and hurdles of integrating apps in a classroom or an entire school system. Information on educational apps are organized in four Corners (Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle School, and Secondary), and different apps are available for each chapter. Many apps are free, others cost from $1 to $5. Inexpensive site licenses for classrooms, schools, and school districts are available for many apps.
Early Childhood
1. BrainPOP Featured Movie
BrainPOP Featured Movie is an innovative educational app that delivers one short animated educational movie every day on a variety of topics. Your kids watch the hosts Tim and his robot pal Moby explore tons of subjects ranging from dinosaurs and aliens to natural disasters and the U.S. Constitution.
2. ABC Expedition
ABC Expedition is an appealing animated alphabet app that introduces babies and toddlers to the alphabet the animal way. It’s everything an app for this age group should be: simple, colorful, and intuitive.
3. Zoola
Zoola is an app that asks younger students questions like “What does the pig say?” and answers the question four different ways. This app shows letter recognition, colors, animal sounds, shapes and numbers all in a zoo themed app.
4. iBooks
The iBooks app allows students to download and read books. It includes the iBookstore, where you can download the latest best-selling books or your favorite classics, day or night. Browse your library on a beautiful bookshelf, tap a book to open it, flip through pages with a swipe or a tap, and bookmark or add notes to your favorite passages.
Elementary
1. Mathemagics – Mental Math Tricks
More advanced students can practice multiplication, square numbers, and more. Use this before district tests and they are bound to do well. It is great for teaching strategies and standards for all levels of math.
2. Free Books
Help your children learn to read and get excited about reading the classics with these apps. Read over 23,000 classic books like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and plays by Shakespeare. The amount of books is amazing and they are updated monthly.
3. PlayTime Theater
PlayTime Theater is a customizable, interactive castle play set that gives kids characters, props, and sound effects and invites them to create and record short shows.
4. The Math Master
Practice math drills and learn math facts on this app, which features a numeric touchpad. It is great for all ages and is a wonderful tool to use as a station in the classroom. This app has a timer for the favorite Math Minutes, and allows you to save scores and create profiles.
Middle School
1. Flashcards Deluxe
With this app, users can enter flashcard information into the app directly, browse quizlet.com for card sets created by users all over the world, and even search the orangeorapple.com decks for a set that matches their needs. The application allows you to share your decks with other users via a private code or to make them available to the public.
2. NASA
This app invites you to discover a wealth of NASA information right on your mobile device. The NASA app collects, customizes and delivers an extensive selection of dynamically updated information, images and videos from various online NASA sources in a convenient mobile package.
3. Kindle
The Kindle app is optimized for the iPad and gives users the ability to read Kindle books, newspapers, and magazines on a beautiful, easy-to-use interface. You’ll have access to over 1,000,000 books in the Kindle Store plus over 100 newspapers and magazines.
