Amigo Centre Outdoor/Environmental Education Program

“GUIDELINES TO LIVE WITH”

What we invite you to do during your visit:

  • Live with nature. Please do not pick leaves or flowers and allow all wild animals to return safely to their homes. Stay on the trails and walkways. Please respect the wonders of creation by “taking only pictures, leaving only footprints”.
  • Be courteous and respectful of one another. Avoid “put-downs” and negative remarks.
  • Enjoy learning through experiencing – nature is a wonderful teacher.
  • Have fun! 

Safety Guidelines:

  • The First Aid Station is located in Junco, a cottage near the Pavilion.
  • Avoid chewing gum. Animals can get sick or die from swallowing discarded gum.
  • Throwing sticks and rocks is prohibited.
  • Benches are for sitting on, not standing or walking on.
  • Shoes are to be worn outside at all times.
  • No smoking in any buildings. Adults may smoke in the parking lot area only.
  • Students are NEVER to touch or play with fire extinguishers.
  • No students are permitted at the waterfront without an adult.
  • Alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs are prohibited. Tobacco is illegal when possessed by a student.

NatureCenter Guidelines:

  • The NatureCenter is to be used only with adult supervision.
  • For the safety of the animals, only Amigo staff may initiate the handling of the animals.
  • “Inside voices” are appreciated in the NatureCenter. Loud noises disturb the live animals in the NatureCenter.

Bells:

  • The bell ringing continuously signifies that we have an emergency. Gather by study groups in the pavilion if you hear the emergency bell.

Amigo Centre Outdoor/Environmental Education Program

ROLE DESCRIPTION FOR CHAPERONES

Chaperones can be parents, grandparents, guardians, teachers, or any other adult who comes along on the trip.

Chaperones play an important role in the Amigo Centre Outdoor/ Environmental Education experience. We are grateful to you as a chaperone for your willingness to give of your time and share in the experiences of the program.

As chaperones, you are role models and are vital in helping us set a positive tone for the overall experience.

We feel it is important that you as a chaperone understand the responsibilities you carry within the program by outlining some of expectations of your role in this unique learning environment.

Classes and Activities:

We ask that each study group be accompanied by a chaperone to allclasses.

Chaperones need to keep a watchful eye for inappropriate behavior at all times and be encouraged to “nip it in the bud”. The instructor may ask a chaperone to take a student aside to address inappropriate behavior. At the chaperone and teacher’s discretion, the student may then be brought back into the group. Amigo staff will look to you to care for discipline problems with students.

Chaperones are encouraged to interact with students and instructors. Your experiences shared in the out of doors will help nurture the students understanding and appreciation of nature.

If you as a chaperone are teaching a class, we now have instructional videos on our website for archery, fishing and orienteering. Check out the videos at under the Outdoor Education tab and refresh your knowledge.

Encourage students to adhere to the rules by respecting others and the natural environment. When the instructor is talking, all eyes and attention should be focused on the instructor. Chaperones are to help keep students on the trail and from picking plants or getting into poison ivy.

Bells are not used to signal the start of activities. Therefore, chaperones play an important role in helping students arrive at the appropriate places on time.

If you bring a cell phone, please be discrete in the use of it. We understand that you may need to be reached at various times during the day, yet ask that you limit phone usage while assisting with classes because of the distraction to students. If you need to be on your phone please be respectful of others by stepping away from the group while you are on the phone.

Lunch:

We ask that there be at least one adult per table during lunch. This gives students a chance to interact informally with you about their experiences. This also helps prevent potential problems.

When Amigo provides lunch, students (and adults) will be allowed to go back for seconds on food. We ask that you help by monitoring that only one student is up from your table at a time. We have started a program called “Zero Food Waste” that is aimed to help raise consciousnessregarding food waste. We ask that chaperones encourage students to finish what is on their plate before going back for seconds.

Other Information:

The designated place for smoking is in the parking lot. This is the only place where smoking is permitted on the grounds. Butt buckets are provided for your convenience.

Thank You:

Once again, I want to say thanks to you for coming along and supporting your school’s experience at Amigo Centre. We could not have a successful experience without you. If you have any questions about your role, please ask an Amigo Staff person when you arrive. Thanks so much!

Shalom,

Cheryl K. Mast
