MARKETING TRUSTEE
BACKGROUND

We are embarking on an exciting period of development by expanding our work within London, and following skills audit are seeking additional expertise to complement that of our current board members. We are seeking to appoint a Marketing Trustee.
There are currently three Trustees: a qualified solicitor, an economic development officer, and a retired Local Authority Director.
The Board are also seeking to appoint a Finance Trustee, (by a separate recruitment process.)
The Marketing Trustee is role is particularly important as the Charity is looking to expand its operations further within London, and in common with many Charities, is affected by ongoing reductions in public expenditure.
We wish to recruit a Trustee with sound marketing, communications & PR experience who can assist us to better communicate our impact and market the excellent services we offer.
You will be responsible for overseeing the external image of the charity as well as contributing to our fundraising and wider strategic aims.
You will work closely with our Managing Director to ensure consistency of messaging and image, building a marketing, communications & PR strategy and helping with the use of social networking to widen our reach.
The role is intended to support our fundraising efforts and experience of working in the area of generating income from statutory funds, corporate and individual giving, would be desirable.
You will provide strategic guidance to the Trustees and management on a wide range of fundraising activities, including an understanding of the challenges facing UK charities in maximising income streams and donor cultivation.
JOB DESCRIPTION
This job description describes the particular elements of the Marketing Trustee position as well as the more general role of a trustee.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ALL TRUSTEES)
· To ensure the charity complies with its governing documents, the Articles of Association and its associated Standing Orders
· To ensure that the charity pursues its objectives
· To ensure that the charity applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives
· To contribute actively to the board of trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the managing Director, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
· To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation
· Acting in the best interests of beneficiaries and avoiding conflicts of interest
· To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation
· To ensure the financial stability of the organisation including the proper investment of the charity’s funds
· Act as an ambassador for Studio Upstairs by positively and actively engaging to promote Studio Upstairs public image
· To take every opportunity to encourage donations and fundraising support in accordance with the fundraising Strategy of the organisation
· Act within the spirit of, and in accordance with, Studio Upstairs equality of opportunity and diversity policies and procedures
· To appoint the Managing Director and monitor his/her performance
In addition, with other trustees, to hold the charity “in trust” for current and future beneficiaries by:
· Ensuring that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these
· Being responsible for the performance of the charity and for its corporate behaviour; ensuring that the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements
· Acting as guardian of the charity’s assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application
· Ensuring that the charity’s governance is of the highest possible standard
The above list of duties is indicative only and not exhaustive. Trustees will be expected to perform all such additional duties as are reasonable commensurate with the role.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE MARKETING TRUSTEE
· Develop the market position and brand of the charity to a variety of audiences in order to enable it to fulfil its mission and aims
· Create a marketing/public relations strategy that will allow Studio Upstairs to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences including the media and key influencers
· Work with the trustees and Managing Director to recognise internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them
· Oversee the ongoing development of the organisation’s marketing and communications strategy in conjunction with the Managing Director and the Board
· Serve as communications spokesperson on behalf of the trustees when required.
· Oversee, in conjunction with the Managing Director, the implementation of the marketing and communications strategy
SUGGESTED TIME COMMITMENT
· The Board of Trustees meets 4 times per year, in London, and holds an annual general meeting, on the same day as a Board meeting.
· There may be an additional involvement in sub Committees, and home based work reading/ preparing documents
· The Marketing Trustee will provide an extra layer of oversight and expertise as well as be available as a resource to assist the Managing Director, staff and other Trustees with any issues, and offer any advice and guidance as appropriate
· Trustees’ travel expenses can be reimbursed in accordance with the Charity’s expenses policy
TRUSTEE PERSON SPECIFICATION
The board of trustees are jointly and severally responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, and financial health, probity of its activities, developing the organisations aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.
All trustees should also be aware of, and understand, their individual and collective responsibilities, and should not be overly reliant on one or more individual trustees in any particular aspect of the governance of the charity.
Experience
An individual is sought who has a strong empathy with our mission.
· Proven track record of significant achievement within your field, operating at a strategic level
· Demonstrable experience of building and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues to achieve organisational objectives and change
· A proven track record of sound judgement and effective decision making
· A history of impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences
Knowledge, skills and understanding
· Commitment to the organisation and a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort, there are 4 meetings per year in London, however some work will be home based, involving reports and the evaluation of documents
· There may be an involvement on sub committees
· Preparedness to make unpopular recommendations to the board, and a willingness to speak their mind
· Willingness to be available to the Managing Director for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis
· Good, independent judgement and strategic vision
· An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
· An ability to work effectively as a member of a team
· An understanding of the respective roles of the chair, trustees and Managing Director

We are seeking an individual who has:
· Marketing qualifications and/or experience
· Ideally, knowledge and experience of current marketing and fundraising practice relevant to voluntary and community organisations
· Ability to communicate clearly
· Preparedness to make unpopular recommendations to the Board if necessary
· Willingness to be available to staff for advice on an ad hoc basis
