JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Production Manager
Department: Production
Reporting to: Technical Manager
Working with: Production Heads of Department, Company Manager, Assistant Producer, Creative teams
Purpose: Production Management on a number of in house productions per year (typically small to medium scale) and as assisting/liaising with freelance Production Managers.
General Responsibilities
· Production Manage typically 5-7 Sheffield Theatres productions per year
· Participate in the management of all Sheffield Theatres productions from inception to delivery
· To participate in the management of co-productions, transfers and tours
· Production Manage on learning and participation projects and productions
· Work with all departments to maintain artistic quality and ensure best technical and health and safety compliant practices.
· Effectively deliver productions within budgets and resources.
· Day to day administration of productions
· Oversight of Health & Safety practices
· Contribute to the environmental management of the organisation
· Deputise for external Production Managers as required
· Represent Sheffield Theatres at Development and Educational events as required
· Represent the Production Department at meetings and events when required

Key Specific Responsibilities
Production delivery
· Plan, co-ordinate and deliver the physical production work (sets, costumes, props, lighting, sound etc.) of all the production (from conception of ideas to project implementation) by the most effective and efficient means possible, to agreed briefs, to time and to budget, with a regard to the company’s high standards of production. This will entail liaison with the director, designer, LX designer, sound designer, composer and any other creative team members, and the appointment and management of other outside suppliers (companies and freelancers as appropriate).
· Plan and manage the technical implementation of productions alongside the in house technical team.
· Plan and chair the white card and final design meetings.
· Plan and chair production meetings, which will be held weekly whilst the productions are in rehearsal.
· Plan and schedule the fit-ups, technical, opening, and all production activity within agreed time frames and budgets.
· Be in attendance and supervise the above activities as agreed.
· Attend post-production evaluation meetings
Staffing
· Supervise any freelance work on the production e.g. set painters, prop makers Line management of all short term contract staff employed on the project
· Authorise and monitor of all overtime in line with the agreed budgets
Finance
· The overall monitoring and control of production and technical expenditure, allocating budgets to individuals as necessary, and ensuring that all expenditure remains within authorised limits.
· In association with the Technical Manager, ensure that proper systems are in place and adhered to for the monitoring and control of all expenditure.
· Report regularly to the Technical Manager with regard to costings, financial control and forecasts.
Health and Safety
· Take a proactive role in ensuring that the company’s safe working policies and practices – especially, but not exclusively, those relating to production and technical work and areas of the building – comply with Health and Safety and associated legislation and regulations
· Responsible for the creation of risk assessments and method statements and ensuring that all working methods are in compliance.
· Ensure that productions comply with all other relevant legislation, including but not limited to CDM legislation, and ensure that appropriate records are created and retained
· Ensure that all staff are made aware of, understand and comply with such policies and practices
Environmental Management & Sustainability
· Contribute to the sustainability of Productions and rehearsal rooms and offices in line with Sheffield Theatres’ environmental commitments.
· Monitor and work towards improving the environmental sustainability of productions and, with the Technical Manager, of the Production Department
General
· Provide support to other departments within the building and offer assistance in any production-related matters
· Represent the Company to external bodies and organisations as required
• As a term of your employment you may also be asked to undertake other such appropriate duties as and when required of you, as well as being asked to work flexible hours to suit the operation of the organisation.
• Participate in all training and development initiatives as required
PERSON SPECIFICATION/ COMPETENCIES
Essential:
· Experience of theatre production management
· In depth knowledge of technical theatre processes
· Comprehensive knowledge of relevant Health & Safety Legislation and experience of ensuring all working practices are fully compliant.
· Experience of running administrative and financial systems
· Excellent organisational ability and administration, with accuracy and attention to detail
· Excellent interpersonal skills both face-to-face and over the telephone
· Fully Computer literate: word processing; spread sheets; database; internet and email
· Goal-oriented and highly motivated
· Ability to prioritise, work well under pressure and adapt to new situations
· A ‘Can-do’ and ‘hands-on’ practical attitude
· Strong, approachable, diplomatic communicator with those at all levels
· A good team player, but able to work independently
· A motivated and enthusiastic self-starter who enjoys creating successful working relationships with directors, designers and production teams
· Diplomacy, discretion, professionalism with a solution-focused approach
· Ability and willingness to work outside of normal office hours when required
· Enthusiasm for the work of Sheffield Theatres
Desirable:
· AutoCAD or other drawing packages
· First Aid
· Health & Safety qualifications (IOSH)
MAIN TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Salary: £30,900 per year.
Probation: Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of 6 months’ probation
Hours: Nominal weekly hours are 40 excluding meal breaks. In addition you will be required to work such hours and/or days, including weekends and public holidays, as are needed to fulfil the requirements of the position.
Holidays: Holiday entitlement is 5.8 weeks per year increasing by a day each year up to a maximum of 6.8 weeks after five years’ service. This holiday entitlement includes Public Holidays.
Pension: On successful completion of the probation you are eligible to join a defined benefits pension scheme (The People’s Pension) with an employer contribution of 3.5% of basic pay and a minimum matching employee contribution. During your probation you will be auto enrolled into The People’s Pension in accordance with statutory deadlines and contributions. There is an option to make pension contributions via salary sacrifice.
