INTERNSHIP PROCEDURES

NAU Department of Geography, Planning, and Recreation

  3. Determine whether or not the student has the academic background to successfully complete the internship
  4. Interview student to determine if the student has the interpersonal skills necessary to meet the needs of the employer
  1. Formalize the Internship
  2. If possible, submit several candidates to prospective employer
  3. Discuss strengths and weaknesses of candidates with prospective employer
  4. Send candidates, with resumes, for interview with prospective employer
  5. Secure contract or written description of internship
  6. Student completes Independent Study Form, attaches internship description, secures necessary signatures, and registers for PL 408, GGR 408, or GGR 608, Field Work Experience (there is a $40 class fee) before beginning the internship
  1. Evaluation
  2. Intern gives Faculty Director of Study at least three progress reports during the internship
  3. Intern maintains a log of significant events and activities
  4. Intern hosts an on-site visit (Arizona internships) for the Faculty Director of Study
  5. Intern submits to the Faculty Director of Study, examples of work products such as maps, documents, etc.
  6. If possible, the intern will give a presentation to a planning class at NAU
  7. Employer submits a written evaluation of the student’s quality of work, attitude, and other observation to the Faculty Director of Study
  8. Faculty Director of Study and Department Chairman conduct post internship interview with the intern
  1. Credit Hours. Normally, 50 hours of internship will be required for each semester hour of credit. The maximum credits that can be earned are 12 for the regular semester, 8 for the 10-week summer session, and 4 for the five-week session.

EXAMPLE OF AN INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

Miss Diligent will work as an intern under the supervision of Mr. Planner, City of Moderation, Arizona. This will be a paid internship requiring 40 hours per week on the job plus attendance at Planning and Zoning Commission meetings and public hearings on city planning. The internship will begin on January 18, 20 and terminate on May 7, 20 . A contract of employment will be completed by the city and the intern.

The intern will carry out the duties and responsibilities normally assigned to an assistant planner of a small city. Specific tasks will include conducting land inventory, public opinion surveys, and site evaluations, and preparing recommendations to the City Council. One of the major projects will involve preparation of material for a public hearing, and representation of the Planning Department at the hearing.

Miss Diligent will schedule an on-site visit by her Faculty Director of Study before May 1, 20 . She will also submit a summary of her major activities and samples of her work to her Faculty Director of Study before May 15, 20 . If possible, she will speak to a planning class about her internship activities, and the strengths and weaknesses of her academic preparation.

Mr. Planner will submit a written evaluation of the intern’s job performance to the Faculty Director of Study by May 15, 20 .
