ELT METHODOLOGY 1

The course runs for 14 weeks.

Aims:

·  to familiarise students with the practical aspects of the ideas and currently used classroom techniques introduced in the ELT Methodology lecture course

·  to provide trainees with the opportunity to try out some of these ideas and techniques

·  to allow trainees to observe their peers practising teaching thus gaining experience in giving and handling feedback on one’s teaching performance

·  to introduce trainees to the fundamentals of lesson and classroom management, as well as to the essentials of teaching English as a foreign language

The course is organised in the form of tutor-led input sessions and micro-teaching slots.

Teaching pronunciation, focus on Hungarian learners’ problems

MT focus: techniques dealing with individual sounds, stress, intonation and rhythm

Teaching Vocabulary: storing words in the mind, word learnability, principles of teaching vocabulary

MT focus: teaching vocabulary: elicitation & presentation techniques, consolidation questions

Course assessment will be based on

·  class participation (max. 2 absences allowed without having to account for them)

·  the submitted, written up version of trainees’ self-prepared materials used in the micro-teaching (description of and rationale for the activities and reflections on lessons learnt)

·  1 progress evaluation report (max.1 page) written by trainees based on their reflections on MT sessions and class feedback, submitted at the end of the course

·  end-of-term test
