Gavilan College Assessment Tests
Before final acceptance to the Academy, each GECA student will take a series of Gavilan College assessment tests to determine reading, writing, and mathematics readiness levels for college coursework. These test scores also determine eligibility for enrollment in almost all transferable academic college courses. The GECA counselor will schedule the tests.
Mathematics
Because GECA math instructors teach all mathematics classes through Algebra II, math scores – although important – are not nearly as critical as those for reading and writing. However, placement in some science classes requires qualification for Intermediate Algebra; therefore, all students will test for math readiness by taking the Elementary Algebra Test.
Reading and Writing
Because GECA students take many of their classes in Gavilan College, it is essential that they are able to read and write at a collegiate level.
These test scores are one of the most important qualifiers for admittance to GECA. Admittance to the Academy will be based on the following criteria:
- All students testing at the English 1A/Writing 148/Reading level are college ready.
- All students testing at the English 250/Writing, 260/Reading level (10th/11th grade), must re-test at the English 1A/Reading 148 level by the end of their sophomore (10th grade) year at GECA in order to remain enrolled at GECA beyond that time.
- All students testing at the English 440/Writing 420/Reading level (9th/10th grade) must re-test at the English 250/Writing, 260/Reading level by the end of their freshman (9th grade) year and at the English 1A/Writing, 148/Reading level by the end of their sophomore (10th grade) year in order to remain enrolled at GECA beyond that time.
*Since students testing at the English 440/Writing 420/Reading level are limited to only Physical Education and a very restricted list of academic classes at Gavilan, it is critical that the English 250/Writng, 260/Reading level has been achieved by the end of the 9th grade academic year.
