Goals:The purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a free society, which is culturally diverse, democratic, and globally interdependent.

Expectation for students/Participation/Behavior: Each student is expected to maintain self-control and follow classroom procedures. Guidelines in the YMS handbook will be followed in regard to behaviors and discipline procedures.

Late Work Policy:Late work will be accepted up to five school days after the due date. Late work will be assessed with a 20 point deduction from the grade earned for the late assignment.

Performance Standards and Required Student Products:

In 7th grade Social Studies, the units of study, will be as follows:

Unit 1 – Concepts and Map Skills

Unit 2 – Origins of Modern Southwest Asia and Southwest Asia Today

Unit 3 – Government, Impact of Environment and Economy on Southwest Asia

Unit 4 – Historical Background of Southern and Eastern Asia Today

Unit 5 – Government, Impact of Environment and Economy of Southern and Eastern Asia

Unit 6 – Africa

Unit 7 – Personal Money Management

Geographic terms, locations, and historical events/dates, like multiplication tables, must often be memorized to facilitate academic success and provide a foundation for continued lifelong learning and understanding. Students are encouraged to review chapter vocabulary regularly.

Required Text: World Cultures and Geography: Georgia 7th Grade Social Studies Edition. McDougal Littell

Anticipated Teaching Methods:

-Students will maintain a Social Studies journal throughout the year, which will contain their daily reflections on material covered.

-Students will maintain a Social Studies warm up notebook, which will be checked periodically, and will also be a good study tool for tests and quizzes.

-Students will be completing several projects throughout the year, which will be counted as test grades.

-Students will also be exposed to a variety of teaching methods in order to meet the needs of all students and various learning styles.

Assessment/Evaluation: A variety of methods will be used by the teacher to determine mastery of the Georgia Performance Standards and the Common Core Standards for 7th grade Social Studies.
