A Wedding by the Well

John 4: 7-15A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink."8For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.9Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.10Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."11The woman said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?12Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?"13Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,14but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."15The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw." I. The Making of a Ministry Moment (Water)

  1. Give to God first.
  2. Get past YOUR ISSUES that get triggered in the conversation (Jews are prejudice. Do you think you’re greater than our father Jacob?)
  3. Don’t limit God because you have a limited view (You don’t have a bucket and the well is deep)
  4. God wants to meet your external, temporary need with an internal, permanent solution.
  5. She was more astounded about what He said about her than what He said about Him.
  6. Even if Jacob’s well is good; it isn’t God!
  7. It will be a fountain of water (everlasting life).John 7: 37-39On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.38He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."39But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.NKJV

John 4: 31-34In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat."32But He said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know."33Therefore the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?"34Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. NKJV

II. The Minister receives Ministry

  1. Some of your ministry comes FROM other people
  2. Some of your ministry comes from ministering TO other people.
  3. Jesus met a natural need by ministering spiritually to someone else.
  4. If you dry and “not being fed”, maybe it is because you have stopped doing the will of the Father!

John 4: 16-19Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here."17The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have well said, 'I have no husband,'18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly."19The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.NKJV

III. A Wedding by the Well

  1. When the woman asks for Him to meet her first need, God asks about her bigger need.
  2. He asks her in a way that she is not ashamed.
  3. Jethro’s daughter found a husband at the well (Moses)
  4. Rebekah found a husband at the well (Isaac)
  5. Rachel found a husband at the well (Jacob)
  6. Jesus will bring up your greatest need only to give you your greatest gift!
