COLUMBUS DAY HOLIDAY
October 6-9 are holidays for our students. Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century but did not become a federal holiday until the 1937. For many, the holiday is a way of both honoring Columbus’ achievements and celebrating Italian-American heritage. Throughout its history, Columbus Day and the man who inspired it have generated controversy, and many alternatives to the holiday have appeared in recent years.Mr. J. Smith of the Houston Bar Association read to our students for Constitution Day.

BULLYING AWARENESS MONTH
National Bullying Prevention Month is a nationwide campaign founded in 2006 by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center. The campaign is held during the month of October and unites communities around the world to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. This campaign has grown from an initial week-long event to a worldwide effort. Bethune Academy students will participate in multiple activities throughout October with their guidance counselor, Ms. Daniels. The first step to prevention is communication! Contact our school immediately if you suspect your child has experienced bullying while at Bethune Academy. You may also email our principal, Dr. Simpson, and she will ensure appropriate measures have been implemented to help put an end to bullying!
Make a Difference Day
On October 28th, volunteers from across the country will unite for Make A Difference Day, one of the largest annual single-days of service nationwide. Since 1992, volunteers and communities have come together on Make A Difference Day with a single purpose: to improve the lives of others.
