CLASSROOMREGULATIONSANDPOLICIES:

Attendanceisrequired.Attendancewillbetakenatthe beginningof eachlab period.Atthebeginning ofeach class,anattendancesheetis placedon theinstructor’sbenchfor studentstosign torecord attendance.Studentsare responsibleformakingsuretheysigntheattendancesheeteachclass period.Ifyou areabsentfromalab,youarestillresponsibleforthe missedmaterialforexams,quizzes, notebook,lab report,etc.You cannotgetany pointsfor any workpertainingtothelabthatwasmissed(quizzes, assignments,etc).Students whodonotattendregularlygenerallydonotdowell in thecourse. If you miss 3 or more labs, you will receive an Administrative Withdrawal.

Prompt attendanceisrequiredforalllaboratoryperiods.A studentarrivingmore than10minuteslateforlab isconsideredabsentfromlab andwillearn0attendancepointsforthatday.For anyexcusetobe "acceptable", youmust provideme withanoriginal (nophotocopies) ofadocumentfromacompetent authority(doctoror otherhealthcareprovider,asubpoena,jurysummons,etc.).Forthispurpose,anotefrom your parentsisNOTacceptable.Theexcusemustspecificallyindicatethedatesthatare tobeexcused,mustbepresentedupon thefirst class daythatthestudentreturnstoschool,andmakeuparrangementsmustbe made at that time. Furthermore, quizzes and lab practicals begin at the start of class and missing a quiz due to tardiness will be handled in the same manner as if the student were absent. Once a quiz has begun, you may NOT enter the lab until the quiz is over and you will receive a zero on the quiz.

Youmustbringtheexcuse within one weekof theabsence.Withoutavalid excuse,agradeof zeropointswill beassignedforthe missedlaboratoryand quiz,if applicable. You cannotturninassignmentsfromalabyou missed.Missedlaboratoriescannotbemadeup. Ifavalid excuseisprovided,themissedlaboratorywillnot countin calculatingthecourse grade.Thismeansthatotherlaboratoryassignmentswillberesponsiblefora greaterweightin determiningthe coursefinalgrade.If youmisslab,youare stillresponsibleforthe lab materialon the lab practical.

Studentswitha validexcusemayattendanotherlabsectionwithpermissionofbothinstructors.Thisis onlyavailabletothosestudents who have avalid,writtenexcuse.Theonlyabsencesthatareexcusableare for illness (requiringadoctor’s note),accident(requiringnotefromthepolice),and legal reasons(requiringa notefromthejudge),andworkobligations outsideof theordinary(requiringanotefromyourboss). Photocopies of the excusable documents will not be accepted. The document must be an original and it must be signed. Contact information for the authority signing the document must be included. Thefollowingareexamplesofabsencesthat areNOTexcusable:travel(includingleavingforbreakearlyor comingbacklate) or anytypeof appointment (doctor,dental,eye,etc.You knowwhenyour class meets,don'tmake anappointment duringthattime).

There areNO makeups forlabpracticalexams.If youhave anexcusedabsence for adate whenalabpractical wasgiven,thosepointswillnotbeconsideredin calculating your grade(however,this meansthattheother gradedworkwillberesponsiblefor agreaterweightin determiningyourfinalgrade).Youareonlyallowed ONEexcusedabsencefrom alabpractical.Ifyoumissmorethanonepracticalwithan excusedabsence,you willbe expectedtoaskfor ahardship withdrawal,sincethelab practicalscountfor amajority of the class points.

COURSEWORKPOLICIES:

Youmustcomeprepared foreachlab.Make sure youreadthe materialbefore comingtoclass.Answerpre- labobjectivesbeforecoming toclass (seelab notebookpolicy). Quizzeswillbegiven overthereading material atthediscretionof the instructor.Youareexpectedtoprepareforthecurrentweek'sexerciseprior tolabso that you willalreadybefamiliarwiththetopicathand.Thisincludesreadingthe informationin thelabmanual andanyhandoutsprovidedby the instructor.Thiswillenableto youto workthroughthelabonyour own, asking theinstructor when you have questions.

Studentsare expected to attendlabfor2hoursand50minutes.Pleasedonotscheduleany appointments, events,etc.beforetheendingtimeoflab. If you leave early to go to another appointment, etc., you will be counted as absent for that lab period and receive a zero for attendance or any graded work due during that lab.

Inmostlaboratoriesyou willbeworkingaspartof alab group.You areexpectedtocollaboratefreelyand participatein theworkofthegroup.Youmaydiscuss any aspectof thelabwith othermembersof your lab grouporof the labsection.Youareencouragedtocompareresults with yourlabpartnersand todiscuss possiblesourcesof error.However,the laboratoryreportisINDIVIDUALwork.You maynotcopythe workof any otherperson.You maynot copyfiles,diagramsortextfromanyotherperson.

Labexercisesaredueatthebeginningoflabonthe assigneddate. Anyassignmentthatisnotturned inatthe beginningof lab periodisconsideredlate.Thereisa 20%perschoolday(M-F)penaltyfor latelab reports.Lab reportswillnotbeacceptedmorethanoneweekaftertheyaredue.Electronicsubmissionofassignmentsis only allowedif theinstructorspecificallypermitsit.Ifitwasnotpermitted,electronicsubmissionswillnotbe acceptedandyour workwillbe consideredlate,losingpointsuntil theinstructorreceivesaprinted copyof the assignment.Printingproblemsarenot an acceptableexcuseforsubmittingworklate.UnderNO circumstances will assignments be accepted more than one week after they are due or after the graded work has been returned to the class, whichever is sooner.

Keepingalabnotebookisrequired.Foreachlab youareresponsibleforcompletionof thepre-lab and post- labobjectivesin yournotebook.Pre-labobjectivesmustbecompletedfor thatweek'slabpriortocoming to lab. Post-labobjectivesshould bebegunduringthecurrentlaband finishedathomeandshouldbein thelab notebookby thefollowinglab period.Lab notebookswillberandomlycheckedforcompletion.Youare responsibleforprintingthepre-and post-labobjectivesand bringingthemtolab eachweek.Thenotebooks willbe excellentstudyguidesforthepracticalexams.

Specificpolicieson practicalsand quizzes willbeprovidedonthedayof the practical/quizitself,butseveral rulesapplytoalltestingsituations:

1.All electronicdevices including cellphones,palmpilots,pagers,calculators,MP3players,etc.arenot allowedduring examsorquizzes,unless specificallypermittedby the instructor.Duringsuch activities, thesedevicesarenotpermittedtobein yourpossessionat all (whichmeanstheycannot be clipped to your belt,in yourpocket,etc.).Possession and/oruseof theseitemsduring an examorquizwillresult inan automaticzeroonthegraded activity,andmayresultin achargefor academicmisconduct.

2.Ifa cellphoneor otherelectronicdevicemakesnoise(by ringing,buzzing, etc.)and disruptsthe testingenvironment,evenif itisnoton yourperson,theinstructorwillpenalizethe responsible student(s)by takingpoints fromtheirscore.

ACADEMICINTEGRITY:

Cheatingin anyformwillnotbetolerated;all workthatyou turnin mustbein yourownwordsand mustbe your ownwork.Ifyourbrainpowerdid notgeneratewhat youturnin, itisconsideredcheating.Examplesof cheatinginclude,but arenotlimitedto:falsifyingdatafroman experiment,copyingtheworkofanother person,allowinganotherpersontodoyourassignment,allowinganotherstudenttocopy yourwork,working inagroup onagraded item,copyingorcloselyparaphrasing referencedsources,usinganythingbutyour brainpoweronanexam,etc.If you miss a lab, you should not have any data in your notebook for the missed lab. If you have data for a lab you missed, then you copied from someone else, which is cheating. Misconductin anyform will resultinazeroonthe assignmentfor all involved studentsandacademicmisconductformswill befiledwiththeOfficeofStudentConductforanyviolation. Eachstudentmustactivatehis/here-mailaccountat ClaytonState University.Theclass listservewillbethe onlymethodforcommunicatingwiththeclassby e-mail.Importantannouncementswill besenttotheclass on theclass listserve.Youshould alsocheckcourse webpagesregularlyfor newpostings.Importantitemswillbepostedonthewebpageforthis class.

Communicationfrompersonalemail accounts(e.g.,Yahoo, gmail,etc.)isacceptable,aslongasthe following requirementsare met:

1.You clearlyidentifyyourselfin thebodyof theemail

2.You clearlyidentifywhich class youare writingtomeabout

3.Thesubjectlineof youremailissuitablydescriptivethat I can tellitisn'tSpamoravirus (e.g.,donot sendemails with asubjectof "Hello",etc.)

4.You donotaskmespecificquestions concerninggrades,astheycannotbediscussedon suchemail accounts.

5. The minimum response time you should expect from the instructor is 24 hours during the school week and 48 hours over the weekend.

Emails thatdo notmeettheserequirementswillnotreceivearesponse.

OTHERGENERALPOLICIES:

•Generaldatafromthiscourse maybeusedby the instructorforresearchonimprovedmethodsof teaching,leadingtopresentation orpublication.Datathatwouldbeusedforthispurposewould consist ofanonymousdata,with noidentifyinginformationfromparticularstudents(e.g.,theoverall averageforthecourse,NOT grades fromparticularstudents).If youdo notwishforyourinstructorto

include yourdatainsuch studies,filloutthewithdrawalof consentform and bringitto yourinstructor.

•Visitors,includingchildren,arenotallowedin thelaboratory.

•Properattireand footwearmustbewornin the laboratoryatalltimes.Inappropriateitemsinclude,but arenotlimitedto:shorts or skirtsabovethekneeand shoes thatdonotcoverthefeet(e.g.,sandals). Studentsshouldnotwearhangingjewelryand longhair shouldbetiedbackduringlab. Students who cometolabwithoutappropriate clothing orfootwearwill NOT bepermittedtotakepartinlab andwillforfeitanypointsforthatday.

•No smoking,otheruseof tobacco,eating,ordrinkingispermittedatany timein the

laboratory.

•Noformof disruptivebehaviorwillbe toleratedin thisclass.Whileavarietyofbehaviorscanbe disruptive ina classroomsetting,moreserious examples include belligerent,abusive,profane,and/or threateningbehavior.Astudent whofailstorespondtoreasonablefacultydirectionregarding classroombehaviorand/or isfound toberepeatedlydisruptive whileparticipatingin classroom activities maybedismissedfromclass.A studentwho isdismissedisentitledtodueprocessandwill beaffordedsuchrightsassoon aspossiblefollowingdismissal.Iffoundinviolation,astudentmaybe administrativelywithdrawnand mayreceiveagradeofWF.Amoredetaileddescriptionof examples of disruptivebehaviorandappealproceduresisprovided

Studentsdismissedfromalesson willleavethe classroomimmediatelyormaybesubjecttoadditional penalties.Dismissedstudentsareresponsibleforany coursematerialor assignmentsmissed.Students dismissedfromacoursehavetherighttoappealthedismissalto thedepartmenthead responsibleforthe course.Appealsbeyondthedepartmentheadmayalsobepursued.If noappealismadeortheappeal is unsuccessful,thestudent willreceiveagradeofWF (withdrawal–failing)regardlessofthecurrentgrade in thecourse.

Conditionsattributedtophysical orpsychologicaldisabilitiesarenotconsideredasalegitimateexcuse for disruptivebehavior.
