TCCD - CLAUSE 2 – JEMALONG REGIONAL EDUCATION CENTRE ACCOMMODATION

Purpose of the Report

I have met with the Mayor in relation to the accommodation costs at the Jemalong Regional Education Centre.

Integrated Planning and Reporting
Strategy / Activity / Outcome from this report
E1.3 Ensure profitability of Council’s enterprises. / E1.3.4 Maximise returns for the Jemalong Regional Education Centre. / Manage the tenancy of Council’s educational, health and accommodation facilities at the Jemalong Regional Education Centre.

Background

When the accommodation was set up by the previous Council it was priced to assist students with accommodation costs while studying. Consequently the pricing is heavily subsidised.

Commentary

Over time, full-time professional people working in Forbes have sought to use the Centre and are also being subsidised. I think it is timely that Council look at the costs for people using the Centre who are not students and have the commercial capability to go to the private market.Council is obliged to run any of their business units in an economically feasible manner and not subsidise people with accommodation to the detriment of like businesses in Forbes.
