Cookeville Soapbox Derby

  • June 17, 2017 from 11am – 3pm (later in the event of rain)
  • Volunteers Needed June 16 & 17 (Set Up, Practice Drives, Tear Down, Event Facilitation)
  • Saturday volunteer shifts anywhere from 1 – 7pm, Sunday anywhere from 7am – 7pm

Summer Splash 5k

  • June 24 @ 6pm (volunteer are needed at 5:30pm SHARP)
  • Volunteers will be in charge of hydration stations at street crossings
  • Additional volunteer opportunities for set up around 4pm
  • This event raises funds to assist local cancer patients struggling in our community

SLIDE Cookeville

  • July 1 and 2 – Saturday and Sunday – 2017 Downtown Slip n Slide, 1000 ft.
  • Volunteers needed for registration booth, slide monitoring, taking bracelets, etc.
  • Saturday you can volunteer anywhere from 6am to 8pm
  • Sunday you can volunteer anywhere from 11am to 11pm

Standing Stone State Park

  • Junior Ranger Camp June 12-16, 2017

•It is a week long day camp for kids up to age 12

•Every day will be different activities

Smart Play Kidz

  • Reading Program, local childcare facility
  • Volunteers come in and read 2 hours of the morning and 2 hours of the evening

Angel’s Attic – Clothing Distribution

  • Volunteers needed on regular basis (sorting, folding, hanging up clothes, etc.)

Kids Matter Program:

  • Children K-4 that live in the Highlands Residential Developments
  • Tuesdays 3:00 – 5:00pm at the TNT site, 706 Pine Ave, Cookeville, TN 38501
  • Snack time, reading time, arts and crafts, and games… all related to the stories read

TNT (Teens Need Training) Program:

  • Children 10 – 17 that live in the Highlands Residential Developments

Farm Assistance:

  • Hector Black (Harvard grad and frequent peace speaker at TTU) needs help on his farm (he is almost 90 years old and his wife is physically disabled, in a wheelchair). He just needs someone to come out and help him carry in firewood for the winter… maybe 3 – 4 times over the winter.If you are interested contact Hector Black at 931-268-9889.

P.E.T.S. LLC (Peterson Express Transport Service): (3701 Long Lane Rd, Cookeville, TN 38506)

  • Volunteers needed for 2 shifts of walking dogs and/or puppies, refilling water buckets and feeding
  • Thursday evenings, 7 pm till 11 pm and Friday mornings, 8 am till 11 am

Cane Creek Elementary After School LEAPS Program

  • Mon. – Fri. 3pm – 5:30pm
  • Program will involve helping students with homework in grades 1-4 and assisting teachers with enrichment activities.

  • For security purposes (since you will be working with children) Michelle will confirm through email with Janet that you are, in fact, a TTU student before Janet allows you to serve with the program

Burks Elementary After School LEAPS Program

  • homework help and academic intervention (mostly with 3rd graders)
  • Need volunteers Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays

 Helping show dogs to families coming to adoption events at locations around Cookeville- promoting adoption for these animals

TTU Backpack Project:

  • 4 hours for every filled backpack
  • 2-3 hours per grocery bag full of items
  • Backpacks of food to be sent home with students who may not eat over the weekend otherwise
  • peanut butter, snack cakes, slim jims or beef jerky, crackers, cookies, individual boxes of cereal, juice boxes, fruits and veggies (that require no refrigeration), beanie weenies, microwavable soups (with pop top lids), chips, power/protein/granola/cereal bars, goldfish, fruit cups, applesauce cups, anything easily accessible for children

TTU Campus Food Pantry:

  • 2-3 hours per grocery bag full of non-perishable food items
  • Think college student food; but healthy as well. Contact Kaitlin Salyer or a full list of items to collect, needs change from week to week, but a basic list is below:
  • Canned soups, canned meats, canned fruits, pastas, sauces, meals like hamburger helpers, boxed cereal, peanut butter, honey, bagged sugar, flour, powdered milk, bagged rice, beans, baking items, etc.

Homeless Backpack Project:

  • 4 hours for every filled backpack
  • 2 – 3 hours for every grocery bag of items for backpacks
  • Items Needed: combs, deodorant, toothpaste, notebooks, pens, toothbrushes, socks, soaps and other hygiene products, gloves and other winter wear during the cold season, chap stick, sunblock and other summer items for the hotter months, razors, shaving cream, lotions, ponchos, umbrella, fast food gift cards, etc.
  • Backpacks to be distributed to homeless veterans in Cookeville and the homeless population in Nashville, TN
