General information of the EMA program
About a fifth of all the people in the world live in China. At the same time as China has the longest continuous culture surviving from ancient times, globalisation widely affects Chinese culture and society. And as a state China will have big influence in the politics and economics of the twenty-first century. Chinese culture and society is undergoing dramatic changes in the era of globalisation and transformation.
The English-instructed Master (EMA) degree in Chinese society provides an excellent opportunity of studying the Chinese society for foreign individuals without sufficient preparation in Chinese. This program is designed with a special purpose to serve the increasing international attention to and research interests in the recent rapid development of China in diverse aspects of Chinese society. To overcome the entry barrier due to the unfamiliarity with Chinese, all courses are taught in English. Our mission is to enhance both the students’ analytical skills and their knowledge of China, with a purpose to establish a foundation for their future academic study or for their future professional career.
The EMA program consists of a two-year full-time course study. The first year of the program is designed to provide a solid grounding in Chinese culture, society and issues of social development. The third semester of the program provides research opportunity on China. MA students are required to complete and defend an MA thesis. The EMA program also admits nondegree students.
Overview of the program sponsor and research resources
EMA program is sponsored by School of Social Development and Public Policy (SSDPP) at Fudan University. SSDPP has four departments: Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Social Management & Social Policy; and one academic research institute: Institute of Population Research. SSDPP has outstanding performance in both academic research and degree programs.
SSDPP has a strong faculty committed to teaching and researching. As of the end of 2005, the school had a total of 47 faculty and staff members; among them 31 were professors and associate professors. Meanwhile, we had 23 PhD students, 102Master students, and about 451 undergraduate students. 18 of these students were international students. The school runs the international joint-program with Bergen University from Norway, Lund University from Sweden, Queen’s University from Canada, University of California from US. As well as the School is actively engaged in international academic community and has networked with renowned institutes in the US, Japan, Korea, UK, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, etc.
Degree and non-degree Programs
The EMA degree program requires a two-year full-time study. For non-degree student, they can study for one or two semesters. The EMA degree program requires students to complete at least 31 non-thesis credits in up to two academic years and successfully defend their MA thesis. The MA thesis will be both written and defended in English. Student will be assigned a supervisor for conducting research and school will provide logistic support to student’s research.

Admission Criteria
Master Degree: Credentials documenting prerequisite academic work that gives evidence of ability to pursue a graduate program in your chosen area are required. To be considered for admission, you should have completed what Fudan University considers the equivalent of a four-year baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university prior to beginning graduate studies. At minimum, a cumulative grade point average equivalent to at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (B grade) in all prior undergraduate college-level course work is required. To be qualified, applicants should have a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 or higher; or an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5 or higher. Applicants from countries where English is the official language are exempted from this requirement.
Non-degree Student: Applicants must be undergraduate students or have completed a bachelor degree.
Assistantships and Fellowships
Fudan University offers Shanghai Municipal Government Fellowship annually to foreign students on a competitive basis. Those students that are self-supported are qualified for competing for this fellowship according to their academic performance and potential. Fellowship application is made in September after the enrollment.

i.One (1) official copy of diplomas for each previous college-level degree program.
ii.One (1) official copy of transcripts for each previous college-level degree program.
iii.Two letters of recommendation from tenured faculty (professor or associate professors).
iv.Official copy of TOEFL or IELTS scores if applicable.

vii.A writing sample of around 2000 words.

B, Non-degree Student

*Applicants must provide notarised copies of their diplomas and transcripts in either Chinese or English.
Tuition and application processing fee
The two-year tuition for degree student is 100,000RMB (about 12,500USD)，For Nondegree Student, the tuition is 25,000 RMB per semester (about USD3125). You can pay by installment for every year or every semester.
A nonrefundable fee, CNY800, is charged for each application you submit to the Foreign Student Office of Fudan University. No waivers of this requirement are granted. Only money orders or certified checks are accepted.
Traveler’s checks are not accepted.

Completing the application
Both degree or nondegree applicants should download the application form online, fill it out, and submit it via mail. Please send applications to:

Procedures:
- Download Admission Application Form online and complete it. (
- Send the application, the application fee and other required materials to the Foreign Student Admissions Office of Fudan University by the application deadline.
- Both admission and nonadmission decisions will be informed by email and by letter. If accepted, applicants will receive an admission letter, a Foreign Student Visa Application Form (Form JW202), and a Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen.
- Accepted applicants should undergo all medical examinations required by the Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen at private or public medical facilities.
- Applicants should bring the admission letter, completed Foreign Student Visa Application Form (Form JW202), Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen, to Chinese embassy or consulate-general for the X or F Visa. (Note: Applicants must retain the original Form JW202. Chinese embassy or consulate-general only requires its copies.)
- Applicants must register at SSDPP with the admission letter, the Foreign Student Visa Application Form (Form JW202) and Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen no later than the registration deadline indicated in the admission letter. An approval for late registration must be issued by the SSDPP. Late registration without a prior approval will not be accepted.
