With great sadness, the family announces the passing of Sheung-woon peacefully at Care Free Lodge, Homes for the Aged, Toronto, Canada, Beloved wife of the late Tong Sui-yuen (1984). Much loved mother of Robert, wife Therese of Sydney, Australia; Peter of Toronto; Thomas, wife Lily of New York and Margaret, husband George Albee of Florida. Loving grandmother of Michael, wife Gesine; Margaret, husband Bulent Gungor; David, MaryAnne and Denise. Survived by her brothers Patrick, wife Lucia of Hong Kong; Brian, wife Mamie of Toronto and sisters Winnie and Rosalind of Detroit. Predeceased by her parents Yu Wan, wife Lan-sin; her brothers Pak-chuen, wife Norma; Ping-tsung, wife Wai-wah and sisters Josephine, husband Patrick So and Margaret. Sadly missed by her many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, colleagues, friends and students worldwide.
Born in Hong Kong, Sheung-woon attended University of Edinburgh, Scotland. She immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1989.
Sheung-woon’s recognized achievement during her distinguished career in Hong Kong include: from 1953-1956, Headmistress of Yan Pak School, founded by the late Law Yan-pak; Co-founder and the first Principal of Maryknoll Fathers’ School in 1957 until her retirement in 1977; Founder and Chairman of the Subsidized Secondary School Council; Chairman of the Secondary Schools Association; Vice-Chairman of the Subsidized Schools Provident Fund Scheme; a Committee Member of the Police Children Education Trust Fund; a Committee Member of the Main Committee of Curriculum Development Committee, and a Member of the Board of Examiners for all foreign civil servants sitting for the Chinese written and oral examinations. As a special guest of the U.S. State Department, she visited numerous renowned Universities and Secondary Schools across the U.S.. In 1971, she received the Award of the Member of the British Empire (M.B.E.) for her outstanding contribution to the community of Hong Kong in education.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and all the nurses and staff at Care Free Lodge for all their loving care given to Sheung-woon. Visitation to be held at Jerrett Funeral Homes, 6191 Yonge St, North York, Ontario (2 lights south of Steeles Ave.) on Friday November 11,2005 from 5-9p.m. and on Saturday, November 12, 2005 from 10.30a.m. until service time at 12 noon. Cremation to follow at Highland Memory Gardens, with future internment in Sydney, Australia. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations for Tong Yu Sheung-woon Award for academic excellence can be made payable to Maryknoll Fathers' School, 2 To Yuen Street, Tai Hang Tung, Kowloon, Hong Kong.
