Explanations
1. Animals get the energy they need from food they eat.
Every living thing needs energy to perform the basic processes of life—such as growing, repairing, and reproducing.
Plants take in light energy from the Sun and turn it into food energy that they can use when they need it. Animals cannot make their own food. They must eat plants or other animals to get the energy they need to survive.
2. One way that animals depend on plants for survival is that animals use plants for food. A cow grazing on grass in a pasture is an example of an animal getting energy and nutrients from a plant or plant material.
3. The body gets energy for performing its life processes from eating food.
As energy moves through a system, it can change from one form to another. Energy contained in food can be changed into other forms, such as heat and energy of motion.
4. Animals get energy by eating the plants. Animals that eat plants are herbivores. Some animals are meat eaters. They get energy from eating herbivores. This food chain passes energy through the ecosystem.
5. Almost all plants can use light energy to make their own food. Animals, including humans, cannot make their own food. They must get food by eating at least parts of other organisms.
Snakes and humans are examples of animals that must get food by eating other organisms. Snakes eat insects, small rodents, and other animals. Humans eat a wide variety of plants and animals.
When animals eat other organisms, energy stored in the organisms being eaten is passed on to the animals.
6. The nutritional labels on food show:
- what the serving size is
- what vitamins and minerals are in the food
- how many calories are in each serving
- how much fat is in each serving
7. Food provides energy and nutrients necessary to the body to perform life functions such as breathing, moving, eating, and sleeping.
8. A food may provide any of these things:
- calories for energy,
- proteins for growth and repair,
- vitamins and minerals for making things the body needs.
Things that are not food include drugs and medicines.
9. Animals cannot make their own food, so they must take in food from the environment. The giraffe is the only animal shown.
10. Green plants use sunlight to make their own food. The only plant shown is in picture Z. Animals, including humans, cannot make their own food. They must eat plants or other animals to get energy.
