POSITION DESCRIPTION
This position is located within the Water Quality Group of the UpperColorado Region, Bureau of Reclamation, in Salt Lake City, Utah.TheUpper Colorado Region manages water and related resources within theColorado, Rio Grande, and Great Basin river drainages in the states ofArizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.The WaterQuality Group conducts field water quality monitoring investigations onReclamation projects within those states on reservoirs including LakePowell (AZ-UT), Flaming Gorge (UT-WY), Navajo (CO-NM), and many more. Theresponsibilities and duties of the intern will include assisting withpreparing and conducting water quality field investigations onReclamation reservoirs and for other Reclamation projects.
Investigations on Reclamation reservoirs will be conducted fromwatercraft operated by trained Reclamation personnel.The intern willreceive training on the use of water quality sampling apparatus andequipment and in sample and data collection methods.The intern willassist with documentation of field conditions, data, and samples.Onother Reclamation projects the intern may assist with groundwater monitoring and sampling and stream water quality monitoring and sampling.
The intern will assist with processing and reviewing data for accuracyand completeness.The intern will receive training on and utilizegeneral and specialized computer software to review and summarize data.
The intern will also assist with analyzing and preparing data fortechnical reports and studies and other water quality related tasks.
Required Skills
To be eligible for the internship applicants must be pursuing abachelor¹s degree, or higher, in an environmental or water resourcescience or engineering related field.Applicants should providetranscripts showing coursework in hydrology, watershed science,environmental engineering, geology, biology, chemistry, etc. orequivalent education or experience.Proficiency with general computersoftware or specialty software including database programs, programminglanguages, GIS systems, environmental modeling programs, etc. ispreferred.
Applicants must be in excellent physical condition to handle the rigorsof the work.Fieldwork will be performed in various environments withexposure to extreme weather conditions.The work will require walkingshort distances over uneven and steep terrain, and lifting andtransporting, for short distances, objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Theselected applicant will be required to complete a security backgroundcheck prior to beginning service.
Water quality sampling apparatus and instrumentation, environmentalsoftware, introductions to limnology, hydrology, and water quality.Workand travel throughout scenic regions of the Rocky Mountains and Colorado
Plateau.
