Integrative Family and Systems Therapy (I-FAST):
Utilizing Family Strengths and Resilience
Integrative Family and Systems Therapy (I-FAST) is a family-based treatment model that was developed with the purpose of developing an evidence-based common factors treatment model that addresses practice realities of social service agencies, embraces social workers’ existing expertise, and empowers the development of expertise at the agency level. Building on evidence-based literature regarding effective family treatments, I-FAST identifies three core treatment components that can be integrated into a coherent treatment protocol for working with families. These core treatment components include: (1) establishing and maintaining a positive therapeutic alliance, (2) implementing change strategies for initiating beneficial shifts in family interactional patterns, and (3) collaborating with other systems that serve the family. The simplicity of this treatment model involves a parallel process between the helping professionals and the families in implementing the model: helping professionals are encouraged to utilize and integrate their expertise around these evidence-based core components in providing treatment and families utilize their strengths and resilience in finding solutions that successfully address their problems.
Objectives:
· Participants will learn I-FAST model and treatment concepts
· Participants will develop initial therapy skills in implementing I-FAST with families
Teaching methods:
· Didactic presentations
· Review of videotapes of I-FAST sessions
· Role-play and exercises
· Case consultation
Specific content:
· Conceptual framework of I-FAST regarding process of change in treatment
· Key treatment components
· Skills in each I-FAST phase including:
o Creating alliance
o Tracking interactional patterns around problems and interactional exceptions
o Developing useful goals and attainable solutions
o Developing frames and rationales for creating pattern shift in the family
o Developing procedures and tasks for creating pattern shift in the family
o Tracking changes and adjusting to responses
o Building resilience and ownership

Biography
Lee. Mo Yee, Ph.D.
Dr. Mo Yee Lee is Professor of Social Work at the College of Social Work of The Ohio State University. Professor Lee’s expertise is primarily in the area of intervention research and practice using a strengths-based perspective and an integrative/holistic approach. Her practice and research focus on domestic violence issues, home-based treatment for at-risk children and adolescents, meditation and treatment of trauma survivors of interpersonal violence, and an integrative body-mind-spirit clinical practice framework. Dr. Lee has published three books by the Oxford University Press: “Solution-focused treatment with domestic violence offenders: Accountability for change,” 2003, “Integrative Body-Mind-Spirit Social Work: An empirically based approach to assessment and treatment,” 2009; and Solution-Oriented Social Work: A Practice Approach to Working with Client Strengths, 2011. Dr. Lee also is the editor of the Journal of Ethnic & Cultural Diversity in Social Work.
Mr. David Grove, LISW-S, LMFT
Mr. Grove is a Full Time Lecturer for the College of Social Word at The Ohio State University. Mr. Grove’s area of expertise is in applying family therapy approaches to diverse populations and problems. Mr. Grove received extensive post-graduate training at The Family Therapy Institute of Washington, D.C. under the supervision of Jay Haley, one of the founders of the field of Family Therapy. In 1992, Mr. Grove was made a Regional Faculty of The Family Therapy Institute of Washington, D.C. Mr. Grove has published two books in the area of family therapy:
“Conversations on Therapy”, co-authored with Jay Haley, published by Norton in 1992, and “Invisible Men”, published by Zeig-Tucker in 2002. For the past ten years, Mr. Grove has been one of the principal participants on the project developing and researching Integrated Family and Systems Treatment (I-FAST). Mr. Grove has provided training in I-FAST for numerous social service agencies in the United States and abroad.
