The Student Service Center (S.S.C.)
The S.S.C. office is where you would go when you need help, such as a counselor, the nurse, or the social worker. You will also find information you need there about lockers and locker combinations, extra curricular activities, a telephone, attendance, athletics, and bus routes.
Counseling/Social Worker/PBIS Behavior Specialist
Our junior high staff includes counselors and social
workers who are here to help you with any concern
you might have. You may see a counselor whenever
you wish by making an appointment with the SSC
secretary. North Junior High Counselors provide students
with personal, social, academic, college and career
planning support. We believe that by working together with
students, families, staff, and the community we can help all
students grow in a diverse and global society.
PBISBehavior Specialists are available to help resolve
incidents of peer conflict, bulling, and other behavioral
issues.
Health Services-Medication Policy
For the students' protection, we have established this policy for taking medications at school as mandated by the State of Minnesota.
1.The administration of any prescription medication requires both a written authorization from the physician and a parent and or guardian. Over the counter medications require written authorization from a parent/guardian.
2.All prescription and non-prescription medications must be in the original containers.
3.All medications that need to be taken at school need to be kept in the nurse’s office.
4. Students may carry their inhalers if a self-carry administration form is on file in the Health Office.
5. Tylenol, and Advil are not provided by the school
and should be brought from home and given to the
nurse’s office for future use.
Incomplete Grade
Work for an incomplete grade on a report card needs to be submitted by mid -quarter of the following quarter, At that point, a teacher will determine a final grade. No incompletes will be given fourth quarter.

Team Recognition Award
Each advisory team has an award event in May to recognize students who excel academically. The criteria for invitation is a GPA of 3.833 or higher for each of the first three quarters of the school year. This is a special celebration for our highest academic achievers. Students will be notified by invitation.
North Way Positive Behavior Program
The North Way program recognizes students who demonstrate positive behaviors and for efforts that go above and beyond behavior expectations. Students receive a North Way Coupon from any adult which is then placed in the S.S.C. North Way container. A drawing for prizes is held each week.
Husky Awards/Freshman Distinction
The Husky award is a special recognition certificate awarded each month to deserving students from each team. The guidelines used by the team leaders for the selection of these students are broad in scope. This award gives the team leaders an opportunity to recognize students who have displayed positive leadership in various areas in the IB learner profile.

It is suggested that whenever possible medication schedules be arranged to eliminate the need for medication to be administered during school hours
Students cannot use spray perfumes, colognes, body sprays, or perfumed lotions in the bathrooms, classroom or hallways due to student allergies and asthma.
Gifted/Talented Program The Gifted/Talented Program is designed for students of high academic potential. Flex classes are available to all students who want to choose challenge in Science, Social Studies and Language Arts. All students can participate in academic contests such as the Quiz Bowl and the Stock Market Game after school.
Students who score in the top 5% on standardized tests in math and reading qualify for the Autonomous Learner Model program (ALM) for identified students. This elective class is designed to provide extra, in-depth study for these students.The gifted/talented teacher also supports subject or grade level acceleration for highly able students.
Term and Mid-quarter Progress Reports
Progress reports will be available for all term finals and mid-quarter (four quarters) electronically on the parent campus portal. The student grades can be viewed online at:

Study Time (S.T.)
Study Time is a scheduled period in the day when students are assigned to quiet study areas to complete assignments or to read books of their choosing. Students may be given a pass by their assigned supervisors to go to a resource area (e.g., Special Education, Media Center, AOM, Computer Writing Lab, Challenge) to work on or receive help with specific assignments or homework.
All 7th and 8th grade students have a Study Time.
The Media Center
Media services are available from 7:15am until 3:00pm each day.
The NJH Media Center provides numerous print and electronic resources to support learning. We are stocked with a great assortment of close to 15,000 fiction and non-fiction books. We subscribe to several databases available via the Media Center web page. There are 16 desktop iMacs as well as 20 iBooks in the Media Center which students use during class visits,and a 32 computer tech lab. In addition, we provide four roving carts of laptops to be used by teachers in the classroom, IPads carts, wireless hubs and laptops can be checked out overnight.

Pledge of Allegiance Board Policy 531
The School Board recognizes the need to display an appropriate United States flag and to provide instruction to students in the proper etiquette, display, and respect of the flag. The purpose of this Policy is to provide for recitation of the pledge of allegiance and instruction in school to help further that end.
XL = eXcel In Learning
The goal of XL is to provide students with individual or group support for 7th and 8th grade levels and all curriculum areas. Students come to XL during their ST to receive help with classroom or modified assignments, tests, organization and study skills, special projects, etc.
A teacher, team, and/or parent assign students to XL. XL is open all day.
School Activities
The school district provides opportunities for students to pursue special interests that contribute to their physical, mental, and emotional health; however, instruction is the school district’s priority. Students who participate in school-sponsored activities are expected to responsibly represent the school and community. All rules pertaining to student conduct and student discipline apply to school activities. All spectators at school-sponsored activities are expected to behave appropriately. Students and employees may be subject to discipline and parents/guardians and other spectators may be subject to sanctions for inappropriate, illegal, or unsportspersonlike behavior at these activities or events.
The Hopkins School District is a member of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL). Students who participate in MSHSL activities must also abide by the MSHSL rules. The district will enforce all MSHSL rules during the school year and in the summer where applicable. Employees who conduct MSHSL activities will cover applicable rules, penalties, and opportunities with students and parents/guardians prior to the start of an activity. Additionally junior high students must maintain passing grades in all classes to participate in junior high athletics.
Athletics
The NJH athletic program is designed for all students interested in participating in after school sports. Junior high students may also try out for some high school teams. Athletic practices at NJH are held after school Monday-Thursday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. A physical must be on file in the Student Service Center (S.S.C.) to participate. Physical Education T-Shirts are required for all North students. Cost is $10.00, and they are available in the SSC and from the physical education teachers.
Student Nutrition Services
Nutritious school meals are a vital link to the physical and intellectual fitness of students. Hopkins’ Student Nutrition Services program provides students and staff with quality food service in a pleasing environment and at an affordable price. Breakfast and lunch programs are provided on all days that students are in attendance.
Cafeteria Breakfast & Lunch Behavior Expectations
Students are expected to demonstrate appropriate, respectful behaviors according to the NJH principals of ethical behaviors during lunchtime.
1. All students stay at school for breakfast & lunch. (No Open Lunch)
2. All students stay in the cafeteria during lunch until dismissed.
3. All food stays in the cafeteria, including bottles and cans. No food in the gym or carpeted classrooms.
4. Identification numbers must be used in all serving lines. Sharing lunch I.D. numbers is prohibited.
5. All food must be cleaned up before lunchroom groups are dismissed.
6. Students are dismissed by table.
7. Failure to follow cafeteria rules may result in consequences including, but not limited to: cleaning tables, sweeping floors, quiet lunch, detention, or suspension at the administrations discretion.

Students must have an approved SY -2013-2014 Application for Education Benefits on file to receive free or reduced meal benefits. Meal benefits are available to students whose families meet certain requirements such as: families might have either one or more children who receive MFIP, SNAP or FDPIR benefits, have a foster child or have a household income within certain guidelines. Free or reduced price meal benefit information is private data and is kept confidential. Spending Student Meal Accounts
Each student has an individual account identifiable with a Personal Identification Number (PIN). When students come to the cashier, they will enter their PIN (assigned when enrolled and remains until graduation) and state their name. The cashiers will have a list of PIN numbers in the event a student forgot his/her number. Students can use their accounts to purchase breakfasts, lunches and ala Carte items from all areas.
Paying Student Meal Accounts
Advance payment is required and is credited to the individual student’s account. The most convenient way to pay is by credit card through our website < Checks, payable to Royal Cuisine, can also be sent to the cafeteria with your student;include the first and last name of each student in the memo section. Student meal account payment can be deposited in the drop box from 7:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m. please put student name and pin number on the envelope. Payments can also be given to a cashier in the lunch line, or mailed directly to the cashier at the school. Sending cash is not recommended.
Student Account Balances
Students must have a positive balance in their meal account to make any ala Carte purchases, either by use of their PIN or a cash transaction. If you have questions about your student’s balance, please contact the cashier in your student’s school between 10:00 am and 11:00 am or the Student Nutrition Services Department. When the student’s account is running low, the cashier will inform the student that it is time to add money to the account. They will be given a reminder note. A phone call to parents will be made when the account is getting low or reaches zero. If the student has no money and a phone call or notice has been sent home, the student will be served a reimbursable meal, but their meal account will go negative. Parents will be responsible for their student’s account charges. Any money left in the account at the end of the year will be left in the system for the next school year. A family moving out of the district with $5.00 or less remaining in their account should contact the building cashier for a refund of the balance; for refund of balances over $5.00 call Student Nutrition Services Department.

Lockdowns, Fire and Hazardous Weather Drills
Fire Drill Exits and Hazardous Weather Safe Areas are posted in each room. A steady sounding of the buzzer means that everyone should immediately move through the building to designated areas. Students must stay with instructors and attendance will be taken. Turning in a false fire alarm is a misdemeanor punishable by law. North conducts five fire drills, five lockdown drills, one enhanced drill (fire or lockdown) and one tornado drill during the school year.
Emergency School Closing Information
If it becomes necessary for the superintendent to delay the start of the school day or to close school for the day, you will be notified by phone and email through our Connect-Ed messaging system.
Backpacks
Backpacks are not allowed in the classrooms at North and West Junior High Schools. Students may use backpacks to transport their books and materials to and from school, but backpacks must remain in student lockers during the school day.
If students do choose to carry a purse or bag, it must be a string backpack, NO EXCEPTIONS. Purses must be carried inside the string backpack.
Hopkins Junior High Attendance Information
Minnesota Statutes state that all children between eight and sixteen years of age must attend school. Students absent from school without an acceptable excuse are considered truant. Truancy is a serious offense, and strong disciplinary action will be taken in every case.
In All Cases of Absence:
•Parents are to call the school, (952) 988-4810, between 7:00 and 9:15 a.m. on the first day of an absence.
•a written excuse from home is required when a student returns from an absence unless a phone call was received from a parent on the day of the absence.
- Notification of absences must occur within five
days of the absence to be considered excused
•Parents should notify the school when excused absences are due to illness which the attending physician feels may be three or more days in order to request homework. Students should check the student portal, Moodle, or e-mail teachers for homework.
•Letters will be mailed home after three unexcused absences.
