General description

Optelec’s pocketsize video magnifier enlarges printed text and images up to 10 times on a 4.3” wide screen display. With its one button simplicity, controlling both magnification and viewing modes, the Compact plus offers an enhanced design that extends in operating comfort. It is designed for everyday use at any location.

Items supplied with the Compact plus

  • The Compact plus pocketsize video magnifier
  • A detachable neck cord
  • A protection and carrying pouch
  • A power cable with power adapter and 4 plugs (EU, UK, US and AUS)
  • The user manual
  • A battery pack containing two rechargeable AA batteries

Orientation

The unit is placed correctly in front of you when the display is facing up and the round magnification/mode button is at the right side of the unit.

Front

On the front of the unit you will find the LCD display. To the right of this is the Mode button. Pressing this button allows you to select one of the five viewing modes.

Around the outside of the mode button is the Magnification lever. Turning this lever allows you to change the magnification level.

Back

On the back of the unit is the camera and the battery compartment. There is also a handle which pulls out from the bottom to the right.

Right edge

On the right hand edge you will find the circular on/off button.

Top edge

On the left hand side of the top edge is a circular socket which is where you connect the power cable.

In the middle of the top edge is a rectangular button which is the snapshot button. This allows you to take a temporary picture of a distant text or image, so you can then bring the image closer to your eyes.

Getting started

Inserting the batteries

The Compact plus operates on a battery pack consisting of two AA rechargeable batteries.

We strongly advise you not to remove, open or disassemble the plastic sealing of the battery pack. Removing this sealing might cause malfunctioning of the batteries.

Insert the battery pack as follows:

  • Turn the unit upside down
  • Press the small half-oval tab at the far end to release the cover of the battery compartment
  • Lift the cover
  • Place the battery pack
  • Set the cover on top of the battery compartment
  • Gently press down to lock, until you hear a click

Turning the power on / off

Switch the unit on and off by pressing the orange button, located at the right side of the unit, for half a second. By default the Compact plus will start in high contrast white on black (negative) text mode.

Using the magnification button

To set the magnification, simply turn the lever which surrounds the mode button on the front of the unit, next to the display. Placing the unit on a flat surface allows you to select one of the three magnification levels; 5X, 7.5X or 10X.

Lifting the unit, allows you to lower the magnification.

Selecting a viewing mode

Pressing the round mode button, located next to the display, allows you to select one of the five viewing modes.

  • Negative mode: reading in high contrast white on black
  • Positive mode: reading in high contrast black on white
  • Photo mode: view full colour text and photos
  • High contrast yellow text on a black background: reading in high contrast yellow on black
  • High contrast yellow text on a blue background: reading in high contrast yellow on blue

Pressing the round mode button for approximately one second, allows you to switch object lighting off. Object lighting can be turned on and off in each of the above mentioned viewing modes, facilitating reading of glossy magazines, displays and screens. Pressing the mode button for one second again, will switch object lighting back on, whereas selecting the next viewing mode by a short press of the mode button will turn the lighting on too.

Using the snapshot button

The snapshot button allows you to take a temporary picture of a text or an image.

  • Hold or place the Compact plus over the text or image
  • Press the oval shaped snapshot button, located at the front side of the unit
  • Bring the image closer to your eyes to view the object or text
  • Turn the lever, located next to the display, to change the magnification
  • Press the round button, next to the screen, to change the viewing mode
  • Press the snapshot button again to unfreeze the image

Writing with the Compact plus

The Compact plus has an integrated writing facility. Take the unit in your hand and turn it upside down (display facing down)

  • Slide the battery compartment away from you (see picture)
  • Put the unit back on your paper (display facing up)
  • Press the Compact plus down on the side of the magnification / mode button
  • Place your pen under the raised side and you can start writing

Slide the battery compartment to its original position to return to the reading mode.

Using the Compact plus handgrip

The Compact plus has a collapsible handgrip; giving you the feeling you are using a regular magnifying glass. Simply pull the handle, located at the underside, to release the handgrip and extend out to snap in place. The collapsible handgrip gives you extra support and control for optimal reading comfort.

Power and battery use

When the AC adapter is not connected, the Compact plus main power source is a battery pack of two rechargeable AA batteries. Off-the-shelf AA batteries can also be used, either rechargeable or disposable. Out of concern for the environment and superior power, we advise you to use rechargeable batteries.

Charging the batteries

To charge the batteries, connect the adapter supplied with the unit to the DC IN 5V jack, located at the front side. Plug the other side into a power outlet. The orange LED indicator next to the adapter socket will glow continuously while the battery pack is charging. When the battery pack is fully charged the LED light will switch off. If the LED indicator starts to flash, it means there is a charge problem. Disconnect the adapter, check if the battery pack is placed correctly in the compartment and try again.

Charging the Compact plus takes approximately five hours. A fully charged Compact plus will operate for approximately two hours and thirty minutes. Please note that, for safety reasons, only the batteries that came with the Compact plus can be charged in the unit’s battery compartment.

System Auto Off

This feature will turn the Compact plus off automatically if it is not used for a period of 4 minutes. Pressing the orange button at the left side will switch the unit on again.
