  7. Observe a child – record your observations, observe for social-emotional development and complete a developmental checklist

To do the following activities you will need to think of a child you know well or are currently working with. Using the CDC milestones website, click on the age category that best fits with the child you are thinking of.

Under each area of development notice if the child you are thinking about has mastered these skills or is working toward them. Additionally notice if what is listed matches your own expectations of what a child this age should be able to do.

1)Take time to observe a child in your care. Describe, by writing down what you hear a child say and/or what you see the child do regarding the child’s physical development (gross and fine motor skills), language, cognitive and social & emotional skills.

2)As you are observing for social-emotional development, notice where the child is at on the continuum of development and how it might affect the child’s ability to separate from their parent/caregiver each day, their level of shyness, and their ability to get along with others. What strategies might you use to help a child with any of these things?

3)Use the Syracuse University developmental checklist after you have observed the child to check off the skills the child has mastered. Your observations should show proof of the child knowing the skill.
