The Perfect Christmas Gift
Are you spending countless hours looking for the perfect Christmas gift for your child? A gift that won’t be forgotten in 6 months? A gift that will be remembered and enjoyed the rest of their life? A gift that will be cherished as the best gift ever? Well, this gift can’t be purchased in any store and it is priceless to us all. The perfect gift to give is time. This might seem like a silly gift, but I guarantee that it is the best gift you could ever give your child. With the latest statistics telling us that the average child spends less than six minutes a day doing something with their dad, and that the average mom spends more time driving their children to various activities than actually doing something with them, we can see that our children get very little of our undivided time. Think about it, when was the last time you gave your child 30 minutes of undivided time? This doesn’t include driving them somewhere or watching them play a game or watching TV with them, it only includes you and them, one on one, with no distractions, doing something together, enjoying each other’s company. This could be playing a game together, reading a book together, going for a walk in the park together or even cooking together. Take the time to talk to them, to listen to them, to be with them. This time will be cherished far more than any present you can buy at the store. Now that my own children are grown, I have learned that what they remember the most is the time we spent together, not what I bought them, but what I did with them and the memories we made doing things together. It is not too late to start these memories. All you need to do is spend time with them. Enjoy them – they will be grown and gone soon enough. Give your children the perfect Christmas gift time. It will be remembered the rest of their life. Have a great Holiday season – together!
Your Partner in Education,
Mr. Guertal, Principal
TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD FOCUSED THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
The holidays are often filled with fun times making family memories. Unfortunately, they are also a time when students can start to develop poor study habits because of their normal routines being disrupted. Here are some study tips to help your child be more successful.
Develop a study plan. Help your child identify what they need to accomplish. At the beginning of the study session have them write down exactly what work needs to be completed. For example, complete two pages of an essay, finish a paper, answer ten math questions, etc. Seeing the goals written on paper increases the chances they will be achieved.
Evaluate what needs to be accomplished. Concentrate on breaking larger tasks down into smaller projects. For example, if your child needs to write an essay break it down into developing a thesis, writing an introductory paragraph, writing each section, etc.
Consistency is important. Establishing a consistent time and place for your child to study will help them to be more successful. The study place may be a desk or a designated area in another part of the home. The important thing is being consistent so that your child knows what is expected of them at that time and place.
Eating well provides your child's body and brain with the fuel it needs. Children should eat three good meals a day including a good breakfast to start the day well. Encourage your child to limit junk foods and eat a variety of healthy foods.
Make a space that is organized and conducive to studying. Store study supplies in a convenient place like a shoebox. Have your child help organize their supplies so they can grab what they need quickly.
Bedtime routines are important to ensure adequate rest and the alertness needed for effective studying. Avoid giving your child caffeine a few hours before bedtime so sleep in uninterrupted. Have your child go to bed at a reasonable time to ensure they get plenty of rest.
Exercise helps to increase memory and study stamina as well as making children generally feel more confident. Children who are physically able should do at least 30-60 minutes of physical activity each day.
Relax and take a study break for 10-15 minutes after each hour of studying. This helps children stay focused on the tasks at hand.
It is important that as children grow into young adults we provide them with the skills and habits they will need for life. Establishing good study habits now will set them up for success in the future.
EARLY DISMISSAL
If it is necessary for you to pick up your child from school before 3:30 p.m., you must send a note regarding the dismissal; then come directly to the office and sign them out. Classroom teachers are not permitted to release students from their classroom directly to their parents before dismissal time, so please don’t go to the classrooms. Students are only to be dismissed early for doctor or dentist appointments. A note signed by the doctor or dentist must be brought back with the student when he/she returns so that it will be counted as an excused absence. Thank you for your cooperation in following these District and State regulations.
YOUR HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED
If you drop something off at the office for your child, or write a note regarding your child, please be sure their full name and teacher name is on the item/note. Also, if
you change your phone number, please inform the office so if there is an emergency,
we will be able to contact you. Thank you for your help!!
VACATION POLICY
Sometimes it is necessary for a student to be out of school to go on vacation with their family. A vacation form must be filled out in the school office one week prior to the vacation. These forms are available in the office. Vacation Policy is limited to ten school days, and students are not permitted to use Vacation Policy during the last week of either school semester, or during State Achievement testing which is being held April 23rd through May 4th, 2012.
PERRY-HELPING-PERRY
There is an organization in our Perry Community that will help Perry residents in need, with food, clothing, etc. If you would be interested in more information, please call Patty Knotts 330.418.4148 or Kelly Hajba 330.949.1628, or go to the website: .
WINTER WEATHER & OUTDOOR RECESS
Unfortunately, winter weather is fast approaching. With the coming of winter weather, I would like to review our recess policy for the coming months. We will be going outside unless the temperature is below 20 degrees (with the chill factor taken into consideration), or we have other extreme weather conditions. Please dress your child(ren) appropriately for the weather, and I strongly recommend that they wear boots, gloves, hats and scarves to school on cold days.
Children will not be permitted in the snow and must remain on the shoveled areas. Recess is a good time to use some of the "stored up" energy from the morning and it helps the students to be more attentive in the afternoon. Your child(ren)'s health is a priority to all of us, so please dress them appropriately for the weather.
Remember to check our Perry Website, www.perrylocal.org, or listen to WHBC Radio, 1480 AM, 94.1 FM for any school closings. Don’t rely on the TV, as there are other Perry districts in the State of Ohio.
MEDICATION POLICY
With the onset of cold and flu season, many of our students seem to need various medications. However, it is against the law for us to distribute any medication (including aspirin, Tylenol, or cough drops) to any student without written authorization from your child’s doctor. The medical form that must be used in order for your child to take any medication at school is located in your Parent/Student handbook or can be acquired in the school office or at most doctor’s offices. This form needs to be filled out in its entirety and signed by the doctor. Without this form, we cannot let your child take any medication. Remember also, that your child is not allowed to transport medication to and from school. If your son or daughter is on medication, you, the parent, must bring the medication and directions to the school office. DO NOT send their medication on the bus. Their safety is a top priority to us. For further information, please consult page 10 of your Parent/Student Handbook.
GRANDPARENT’S DAY – THRUSDAY, DEC. 13, 2012
Whipple grandparents are invited to enjoy the 2012 Christmas Program to be performed by our very own 1st and 2nd grade students!
After the show, guests are invited to join their grandchildren for cookies & punch in their classrooms.
Kindergarten, & 1st grades: 9:30am-11:00am * * * 2nd, 3rd & 4th grades: 1:30pm-3:00pm
Each classroom will need 12 dozen cookies, as well as 2 parents to serve the punch. Please contact your head room parent, if you can help.
Anyone who wishes to donate cookies - NO PEANUT BUTTER, PEANUTS OR ANY OTHER NUTS as we have many children allergic. Please have them to the school on Wednesday or early Thursday morning. If you have a container you want returned, put your name & the teachers name on it. If you have volunteered to help in a classroom, come in early to help prepare cookie trays and to be sure that you have enough time to set up your classroom. We also could use 3-4 volunteers in the evening to serve punch and help with clean up.
Please call Gretchen Kropp (567) 228-9037 with any questions. Thank you! This is always a fun day for the children! Be sure to invite your grandparents for this special day.
