Grade 11 Independent Math Project

Your math project is to include a written paper, a visual, and your participation in a Mathematics Fair.

In order to successfully complete your Math Project you are to follow these steps:

First of all, keep a written record of all ideas and research that you conduct from this moment on. This research and work should be kept someplace safe.

Select a project topic:

Begin by choosing at least three project topics from the prepared project idea list. Make choices that interest you or peak your curiosity. During the next few days investigate these choices enough to have a rough idea of what they are about and then make your final decision on your project topic. Note your topic does not have to come from the teacher provided list. The list should act as a starting point. All topics must be approved by the teacher and each student will be doing a different topic. The topics will be on a first come first serve basis.

Research:

Carry out thorough research of your topic. Please explore multiple sources, and record everything you learn about your topic and where it came from. These sources can be books, periodicals, and information accessed though the internet. You can also discuss your ideas with others, or seek out professionals in that field to talk to. Students will record all researched information in note form and record their sources as well.

Rough Outline:

This is to give the skeleton of the paper. You will hand in a paper that will tell the teacher what you will be including in the introductory paragraph, what will be included in each one of your body paragraphs. As well what quotes or resources you might use for each paragraph. Your rough draft must be detailed to show all your research, and be well thought out and show direction in where you will be heading with your paper. When you hand this in you must give an idea as to what your visual will be when you do the mathematics fair.

Written Paper:

The written report must include a Title and a Title page, Introduction (one paragraph that gives an overview of the project), Body (this talks about the main ideas from the intro and gives the background research you found), a Conclusion (a summary of what you learned), and a Bibliography (list of a references and websites used). The bibliography is to be done in MLA format. At least five sources must be used and no more than three can be websites. Drawings can be included throughout to make information more clear.

The paper is to be a minimum of 3 pages, Double Spaced with Times New Roman 12 font.

Visual:

Visuals can be various forms: physical models, posters, a game or activity, a mini lesson. Try to make it somewhat interactive if possible.

Mathematics Fair:

Half of the class will show off projects one day, while the rest of the class visits and learns about the projects. Students will switch places the next day.

Important Notes:

If a deadline is missed for handing in the Rough Outline, or the Written Project they will be assessed at an increasing penalty of 10% for the 1st day, 20% for the 2nd day and 50% for the 3rd day. If it is handed in after this it will receive a zero.

If you are absent the day you are supposed to present, (if it is an excused absence) you will present your project to the whole class for 5 minutes the next day you are at school. If it is an unexcused absence then you will receive a zero.

If you are absent the day you are supposed to visit the projects, (if it is excused) you will be asked to come in at lunch and answer questions from the visuals of the other projects. If it is an unexcused absence then you will receive a zero.

Plagiarism will not be tolerated and if plagiarism occurs the student will receive a zero for the written portion of the project and will be referred to the office.

May 4, 2007 – Rough outlines will be handed back at the latest.

May 14, 2007 – Written Project Due

Written Paper / The paper will be broken down in the following points
Title page (2 points) – Creative, needs to have the title of project, Your name, Due date, and teacher
Introductory Paragraph (5 points) – It needs to have a topic sentence, and introduce the ideas that will be discussed in the main paper
Body (20 points) – There should be a paragraph for each idea presented in the introductory paragraph. Ideas must be fully developed and flow between paragraphs. Resources should be cited in each paragraph. Must have correct grammar and spelling.
Conclusion (5 points) – Sums of the ideas of the paper, and presents what was learned. Must close the paper.
Bibliography (3 points) – Sources must be correctly formatted in MLA format, and there must be at least 5 sources and no more than 3 can be from the internet. / 35 points
Visual / The visual component will be broken down into two sections:
Information (10 points) – must contain a written component, which is informative, easy to read and student friendly, like an exhibit in the museum.
Presentation (10 points) – The actually visual component must be neat and presentable, organized, readable, creative, diagram and pictures.
Oral (5 points) – interaction with class and teacher / 25 points
Math Fair / During the mathematics fair you will be asked to visit your class mates projects you will be marked on your:
Participation (5 points) – that you are engaged, and showing respect
Written (5 points) – questionnaire of the projects / 10 points
