Job Title: / Adviser for Secondary RE and Theological Development
Responsible to: / Mgr Kevin McGinnell
Location: / Luton (travel throughout the Diocese)
Working Hours: / 35 hours per week
Salary: / Circa £35,000 per annum plus diocesan pension scheme
ROLE SUMMARY
To support the highest standards of Religious Education in our Catholic secondary school and academies and to develop theological resources and training for teachers in all of our schools.
To be responsible for the planning, organisation and implementation of the Ofsted Section 48 inspection process for all our schools (from year 2 in post).
To contribute to the promotion of the Church’s mission and ministry in education by sharing responsibility with the other members of the NORES team for the development of Catholic Education and working in diocesan schools and academies.
To contribute as part of the wider NORES team in supporting Catholic Education across the diocese.
MAIN DUTIES

Secondary RE Adviser

  • to promote in every way the highest quality provision of Catholic Secondary RE Curriculum

[11-19] as part of the spiritual and religious development of our young people

  • to develop the understanding of the diocesan approved RE curriculum in KS3 [People of God]
  • to support examinations in religious studies at GCSE, Advanced level
  • to promote and ensure quality of General Religious Education in sixth forms
  • to work with Heads of RE and to support RE staff across the sector
  • to monitor and support whole school and departmental self-evaluation at Secondary level
  • to represent the diocese at regional and national level regarding Secondary RE
  • to play an active part in other work of the team as appropriate
  • to support, advise and challenge head teachers, governors and staff of Catholic schools, to promote and develop the distinctiveness and effectiveness our Catholic schools in general, and Religious Education in particular.
  • to advise and support head teachers, senior leaders and governors to develop the critical skills and resources needed to fulfil the requirements of the Church as expressed through S48 and canonical inspections in the religious education and Catholic life fr her schools.

Theological Developmentas a primary focus in the first year

  • to work with the team to develop theological formation of staff in our Catholic schools
  • to develop theological resources to support specific programmes of religious education in use in our schools
  • to promote theological and spiritual understanding of the nature of Catholic education for all staff, governors, and all concerned with the development of our schools.

S48 Inspection Manager – to shadow the present post holder in the first year, and to assume responsibility from the second year.

  • to be responsible for the planning, organization and implementation of Ofsted Section 48 inspection process
  • to work with members of the Diocesan Inspection Team, meeting training needs and ensuring good practice in the conduct of school inspections
  • to select, induct and train new inspectors where appropriate
  • to work with schools before during and after inspection so as to ensure school improvement
  • to represent the diocese at national level regarding Ofsted Section 48 Inspection
  • to review and develop the diocesan inspection process in line with local and national requirements

SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

Individuals will be required to demonstrate that they have the necessary knowledge, skills and attributes to undertake this role with competence and confidence.

Essential Qualifications/Experience

  1. Committed practising Roman Catholic in full communion with the church.
  2. Educated to degree level or equivalent in Religious Studies or Theology.
  3. Qualified Teacher status.
  4. Good interpersonal skills. The ability to work alongside people in a mature, affirming and non-threatening manner.
  5. Appropriate experience in educational leadership and management, eg head of department.
  6. A good understanding of Catholic education.
  7. Ability to attend commitments outside normal office hours.

Skills

  1. Work as part of a team and on own initiative.
  2. Possess a Full UK Driving License and own car.
  3. Proficiency in appropriate ICT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Outlook and PowerPoint.
