Project overview:
CGL Islington assists those who live in the Borough of Islington with substance misuse issues. CGL provides a range of services including refreshments, shower and laundry facilities, psychosocial interventions, prescribing, needle exchange, healthcare and complementary therapies.

Team:
CGL: Direct Access, Assessment and Psychosocial team.
Role title: Volunteer Complementary Therapist
Managed and supported by: Complementary Therapy Lead CGL
Purpose: To provide specified complementary therapy to clients
Role description: (after training)
- To provide treatments for clients as part of their recovery plan.
- Work within, and as part of the team(s), to provide a comprehensive service to clients, liaising with key workers and the Complementary Therapy Lead, as appropriate
- Work according to standards laid down by relevant governing and professional bodies (e.g. Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council, Shiatsu Society, Zen Shiatsu Society, Craniosacral Therapy Association of UK, Complementary Therapists Association, British Acupuncture Council)
- Assess the suitability of clients for treatment, take relevant case history information and refer on to other professionals, as appropriate
- Maintain appropriate records, including details of the contact.
Training
- Undertake training as directed by CGL to ensure knowledge of the service and client base
- To be responsible for own personal and professional development (eg. Continuous Professional Development).
Supervision
- Attend regular supervision sessions to ensure appropriate support and ongoing development.
Other
- Adhere to CGL polices and procedures and codes of ethics
- Attend meetings, as necessary.
Personal Specification:
- Hold either a full professional qualification in the complementary therapy to be practiced, or to be at a level of training considered competent to work in the community with this client group
- Experience of delivering the therapy to be practiced
- Willing to attend training and regular supervision
- An understanding of or interest in the issues faced by the client group
- Willing to work as part of a team
- Able to respect and maintain confidentiality
- Have a mature empathetic, non judgmental attitude to clients
- Good communication skills
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills
- Understand the principles of equal opportunities and diversity
Time commitment:
A minimum of half a day a week for a six month period following training.
CGL Islington is open Mon, Wed and Friday 10.30am – 5.00pm, Thurs 10.30am – 8pm and Tuesday 2-8pm.
