from Best Friends Animal Society®, PetSmart Charities®

Grant will support CatPAWS’ lifesaving work for community cats

Seal Beach, CA 2012) ─ Best Friends Animal Society®in partnership with PetSmart Charities®ispleased to announce that Helen Sanders Cat Protection and Welfare Society (CatPAWS)been awarded a grant for The Beach Cats Spay/Neuter Project.

CatPAWSis a participating member of the No More Homeless Pets® Network, a program of Best Friends Animal Society, which offers help and support to animal rescue groups that save lives in their communities.

“This grant project targets free-roaming community catsat serious risk of being killed if they enter shelters. It provides an innovated solution to save their lives while working toward achieving the Best Friends mission of No More Homeless Pets,” said Ellen Gilmore, manager of Best Friends’ No More Homeless Pets Network.

Through The Beach Cats Spay/Neuter Project, homeless free-roaming cats are sterilized using trap-neuter-return (TNR), the widely accepted, humane method of controlling populations of free-roaming cats. The cats are also vaccinated.

“TNR is an alternative to the ‘trap and kill’ policies that traditionally have been employed by animal control agencies to address cat over-population and nuisance complaint situations,” Gilmore said. “Trap and kill repeatedly has been proven to be ineffective, cost-prohibitive and publicly unpalatable.”

CatPAWS spokesperson, Annelle Aviani-Baum, said: “This grant means that we can add The Beach Cats Spay/Neuter Projectthis year to our efforts to find forever homes for deserving rescued pets. Our goal is to perform 200 spay/neuter operations over one year.We would like to thank Best Friends Animal Society and PetSmart Charities for their support in making this project a great success.”

This lifesaving grant is part of Best Friends Animal Society’s mission of No More Homeless Pets®. Every day, approximately 9,000 pets are killed in shelters because they don’t have a home. Best Friends and the No More Homeless Pets® Network Partners are committed to saving them.

About CatPAWS: Dedicated to reducing suffering and death for homeless and stray cats, CatPAWS performs trap/neuter/return (TNR) as well as fostering and finding homes for kittens and adoptable cats and providing spay/neuter education and vouchers. Visit CatPAWS at , with link to Facebook.
