Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar's.”

Matthew22:20-21
Twenty Third after Trinity
Opening hymn: 619 (vs 1,3,5,6) When morning gilds the skies
Our worship continues on page 1 of the green liturgy booklets.
The Collect:Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord, to your faithful people pardon and peace; that they may be cleansed from all their sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 11:1-10
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 44:1-9
We have heard with our ears O God our ‘ fathers have ‘ told us : what thou hast done ‘ in their ‘ time of ‘ old;
2 How thou hast driven out the heathen with thy hand, and ‘ planted them ‘ in : how thou hast destroyed the ‘ nations and ‘ cast them ‘ out.
3 For they gat not the land in possession through their ‘ own ‘ sword : neither was it their own ‘ arm that ‘ help-ed ‘ them;
4 But thy right hand and thine arm and the ‘ light•of thy ‘ countenance : because thou hadst a ‘ favour ‘ unto ‘ them.

5 Thou art my ‘ King O ‘ God : send ‘ help ‘ unto ‘ Jacob.
6 Through thee will we over’throw our ‘ enemies : and in thy Name will we tread them under that ‘ rise ‘ up a’gainst us.
7 For I will not trust ‘ in my ‘ bow : it is not my ‘ sword ‘ that shall ‘ help me.
8 But it is thou that savest us ‘ from our ‘ enemies: and puttest ‘ them to con’fusion that ‘ hate us.
9 We make our boast of God ‘ all day ‘ long : and will ‘ praise thy ‘ Name for ‘ ever.
Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy ’ Ghost;
As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’ — ’ men.
New Testament Reading: Philippians 3:17-21
Brothers,join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walkaccording to the example you have in us.Formany, of whom I have often told you and now tell youeven with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.Their end is destruction,their god is their belly, andthey glory in their shame, withminds set on earthly things.Butour citizenship is in heaven, andfrom it weawait a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ,who will transformour lowly bodyto be like his glorious body,by the power that enables him evento subject all things to himself.
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel:Matthew 22:15-22
Gospel is announced, we respond: Glory to you, O Lord
Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that
you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away
After the Gospel is read we say: Praise to you, O Christ
