We are committed to helping businesses educate their most valuable resource, their employees, through programs designed to bring awareness of unsafe driving behavior. The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) offers electronic and print resources as well as activities, events and speakers. Our educational programs are based on Highway Safety Priority Areas including Occupant Protection, Impaired Driving, Distracted Driving, Pedestrian Safety and Motorcycle Safety. Most are interactive, encouraging participation from a diverse audience. For more information, contact KOHS Corporate Outreach Coordinator Jack Hutchinson.
Occupant Protection
Problem: While in Kentucky Seat belt use is at 73% (2009), statistics reveal that as many as half of those killed in crashes who weren't wearing seatbelts may have survived had they buckled up.
How KOHS can help you:
· Provide Click It or Ticket posters and other materials.
· Provide sample seat belt use policy.
· Provide guidance on how to conduct seat belt surveys.
· Provide buckle up signage for parking lots.
· Provide a list of appropriate speakers from KOHS and law enforcement.
Impaired Driving
Problem: Three out of every 10 people will be affected by an impaired driver at some point in their lives. In Kentucky, about 1/4 of all fatal crashes are alcohol or drug related. In addition, statistics reveal that male drivers aged 21 - 34 are three times as likely to be killed in an alcohol or drug related crash, and four times as likely to suffer sever injury.
How KOHS can help you:
· Provide Impaired Driving posters and other materials.
· Provide sample Driving Under the Influence (DUI) policy.
· Provide a list of appropriate contacts that can demonstrate interactive activities for employees with Fatal Vision Goggles and simulated impaired driving with the 3-D (Drunk & Drugged Driving) Simulator.
· Provide information on how to support designated driver programs.
Distracted Driving
Problem: According to recent studies, driver inattention is the leading factor in most crashes and near-crashes. Based on these findings nearly 80 % of all crashes and 65 % of near-crashes involved some form of driver inattention within 3 seconds before the event.
In Kentucky during 2008, there were more than 53,000 collisions where driver distraction was noted as a factor. These crashes resulted in more than 15,000 injuries and 199 fatalities.
How KOHS can help you:
· Provide Distracted Driving posters and other materials.
· Provide a list of speakers to educate about Distracted Driving.
· Provide a list of appropriate contacts that can demonstrate interactive activities for employees with Fatal Vision Goggles and simulated distracted driving with the D2 (Distracted Driving) Simulator
Pedestrian Safety
Problem: In 2008, 66 people were killed while walking and 6 were killed while riding a bicycle; most of those fatalities occurred in low light conditions (dusk or dawn) and after dark.
Motorcycle Safety
Problem: In 2008, 96 motorcyclists were killed on Kentucky’s roadways. More than half of those killed were not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has estimated helmets to be about 37 percent effective in preventing fatalities.
