Earth Science Safety Contract

Safety in the laboratory (we do not have a science lab so it is just our classroom or room 307 on lab days) is the number one priority in this classroom. To help ensure everyone’s safety, this contract has been developed. Please read the contract and then provide your signature and your legal guardian’s signature at the bottom. You will not perform any experiments in class until this contract is signed and returned!

1.  Do not touch any materials on the table until all written and verbal directions have been covered carefully. Ask questions if you do not understand the directions.

2.  Appropriate behavior and use of equipment is required at all times. NO EXCEPTIONS!!

3.  Wear safety goggles or safety glasses when indicated – NO WARNINGS!

4.  Eating (including candy), drinking (including water), and chewing gum is not allowed only on lab days. Never taste anything during a lab unless told to do so. Keep area clean and neat. Keep aisles clear, stay seated in your own group and push chairs in when not in use. Especially with the curved back of our chairs, they can be very dangerous especially on lab days!

5.  Perform only those experiments authorized by the teacher.

6.  Learn where the safety equipment is located (fire extinguishers & eyewash). Know where exits are located and what to do in the case of an emergency.

7.  Accidents happen. Report all accidents and/or injuries to your teacher immediately. Do not clean up broken glass yourself – inform your teacher immediately.

8.  Clean, rinse, & wipe dry ALL work surfaces and equipment at the end of the lab. Return all equipment to its proper place. Follow directions for the disposal of lab materials.

9.  Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth & body when using chemicals. Use proper wafting technique when smelling objects or chemicals.

10.  Wash hands with soap & water after cleanup is done.

AGREEMENT STATEMENT:

I have read & agree to follow all of the safety rules set forth in this contract. I realize that I must obey these rules to insure my own safety, and that of my fellow students and teachers. I am aware that any violation of this safety contract may result in being removed from the lab and/or further disciplinary action. If a second violation occurs, I am not allowed to perform any more labs for the rest of the year. An alternate written assignment will be given and due in place of the lab. These rules are always posted in the classroom for my reference.
